Bought 04 Z06, wrong size tires
 

Just bought an 04 Z06 from a Chevy dealership and they just informed me that they put brand new Goodyear F1's all around as I could see. I did not closely inspect them until I bought the car though.

Turns out, the fronts are 245 and backs are 275.

I know they are supposed to be 275, 295. It even says it in the door panel: 275 front, 295 rear.

I am going to bitch about it as soon as I get the time to go down there. Anyone think they will put the right tires on it? The ones on the car have only about 200 miles on them. I am trying to think of things to say. One thing I thought was, "you shouldnt have sold me the car with the wrong size tires, this is a safety issue".

Gm sets the tires requirements for the car. I would think and hape, maybe pray, that the dealer is a standup individual and make it right. There are good dealers out there. Start with used car manager. If that fails, go to general manager. If it is certified, contact General Motors!

It just seems to be a crap shoot with some of the dealers.

Suggest you insist on having your selling dealer mount the correct tires or return the car for a full refund. They should be F1 Super Car tires in the correct size.

On a 2002 Z06, they have the following designation:

Fronts: 265/40ZR17 91Y SL
Rears: 295/35YR18 91Y SL

Accept no less. Usually the dealer will accommodate you to keep the sale on his books this month.

Demand the new tires of a full refund. They put stock C5 sizes on.

Otherwise you will be out of pocket about $1,500 for replacing them yourself.

Are the ones that are supposed to come on the car, Goodyear Eagle F1 'GS' or 'Supercar'? I am not sure which specific F1's they are, but I will check after work.

My 2002 Z06 which I bought new has these tires. NOTE they all all "Z" rated!

Also with your smaller tire you will probably "curb" your wheels. They are bad about that with the factory Z06 tires on the factory Z06 wheels but with a smaller tire it will probably be worse and the wheels are not cheep.

I just priced a new set on tirerack.com and a new set of the GY F1 Supercars, 275, 295 would be 1200 with road hazard warranty. Either way, I hope the dealership steps up.

One thing people havent asked. Is there actually Z06 wheels on the car?? Its possible they or the previous owner actually put C5 wheels on the car.

Why do people think telling a dealership this will make them jump to your commands? The deal is done, they have your money. They have no reason to spend money on you now to make you happy after the deal.

It's a crap shoot, that's for sure...and guess who gets the crap most of the time!

Just in case you didn't guess correctly I'll give you a hint...it's not the dealer. :toetap:

There is a second option, say the dealer won't replace the tires, but offers some additional cash back. If the tires that are on the car are brand new and a name brand (you didn't say which tire was installed) you can always buy new replacement tires of the correct size then sell the C5 size tires here on the forum.

In addition, you don't have to buy the OEM tires, you can always upgrade to any number of different manufactures tires such as the Michelin's. So while you may out some $$$ I'm sure you won't be out as much as you think and you'll have brand new correctly sized upgraded tires.

So consider this an opportunity if the dealer starts down that path.

Fair question. Here is why.

Wrong size tires on a car indicate that the dealer made an error. It mounted Corvette size tires; but should have mounted Corvette Z06 tires. The tires he now has are undersized for the Z06 and present a safety issue.

Most dealers care about their reputation and have a return policy. A tire size mounting error is a material safety complaint to file with the Better Business Bureau. The dealer knows that.

For that reason the owner of the dealership, if it escalates to that level, will ensure that the tires are replaced with the correct size for a Z06. If that's not done willingly, a BBB complaint will trigger a parallel complaint to the Chevrolet legal department. Those guys have a way of persuading a reluctant dealer to do the right thing.

Ranger is exactly right, and I don't understand why anyone would think otherwise. They flat out put the wrong size tire on the car. They need to correct it. Period.

I am still wondering if there are actually C5 wheels on the car though. I have seen a real Z06 before with C5 wheels on it. I think it was on ebay. if someone is going to be trading the car into a dealer some people will do things like that to sell the original parts & make more money & sometimes the dealers are oblivious. I wouldn't say it's likely, but the fact that the boneheads put the wrong size tire on you never know.

Yes they are original Z06 wheels. You can visually SEE that the tires are too small. I should have noticed when I bought it. :rolleyes:

As I said, the tires are brand new (not even 300 miles on them).

I think the biggest argument is safety.

I will let everyone know when I find out. I am sure they will work something out with me...

245 tires on the 9 1/2" Z06 (front) wheels is a safety problem. Goodyear lists this as an incorrect application. Let them know that if a wheel pops off the rim they will be sued big time. That should do it. See Tirerack.com for tire size/wheel size application and print it out for them. In any case it is not went GM intended for that car. Someone just didn't know what they were doing.
When looking for my Z06 some dealer in Utah put EMT run flats on a Z and thought that was a selling point. The new owner would never know when he had a flat, having no warninmg system in the Z06, and at some time it might cost him his life.
