when it’s in a tree like that and not moving try using manual focus because it looks like your camera focused on one of the branches in front of it and not on the bird itself.
also if you walk in a zig zag pattern towards it, it usually wont get too spooked and you can get a little closer.
this isnt my best composition but was able to get real close today.

We both struggled with these pics, sneaking up slowly and trying to shoot through the branches was almost impossible. Me with my brand new lens fumbling around and then being invited I didn't want to screw up his shoot so I was a tad nervous.
