Ansel Adam once said there is a great photo waiting in every frame to be discovered...your job is to find it! That in its essence is what photography is all about.
I have not done this is in awhile due to time constraints, but years ago I would go do "photo walks" with a group of photogs. We would just walk around what seemed to be very basic areas and trying to find something interesting in the frame to make a nice composition. Is there a spiderweb, a old broken bottle, a sign with a lot of patina, an old weathered board, peeling paint etc... This is such a great exercise for all of us to try.
Not to hijack this thread...but below is a good example of an old run down Textile Mill. Nothing special about it at all. I found what I thought we some interesting angle and peeling paint. Are these any good, IDK...but I know they could have been alot worse if I didn't take the time to study the area I was photographing.

Again I apologize to others for hijacking this thread but I wanted to respond to this message. My friend you are touching on exactly what I love about photography. As I said previously Art is highly subject, so to that point are either of those photos any good? IDK and honestly I really don't care...it was my Vision of what I wanted to create and there are never rights and wrongs when we talk about someone's vision. If 10 of us were in the same place at the same time (assuming we were not intentionally trying to copy each other) we would have 10 different photos...from a different viewpoint, a different focal length, a different composition a different aperture, a different exposure and different post production technique. THAT to me is what is so cool about photography!
No one could ever be more critical of my work that I would be and I think that is the secret to getting better. When I see that top shot I cannot help but think what it would look like if I would have packed my Macro lens and got some really tight close ups to focus on the texture of the paint and show it in a really different way. Does that make what I did wrong or bad...no, just different.
My unsolicited suggestion is to maybe take a lens you rarely use, shoot from a vantage point you rarely compose from using setting you would not normally use and you will be surprised on what you create. Regardless of how experienced you are we all can use inspiration from time to time. You are definitely on the right track. My final suggestion is don't look a place/object/person etc... as what it is NOT...instead think about what it COULD be. The bottom photo is a final example of this and then I will not hijack again. I was in Prague, CZ for an entire week and the weather was overcast every single day...could not really get a decent sunrise or sunset. There was a break in the clouds and although the sky still was just grey (no color) the sun peaked out for just about 15 mins. I see this happen and I sprint to the highest point I could get access to and captured the image below. Is that photo going to win any awards? No of course not, but IMO the Black and White conversion really shows the amazing detail in the structures and the sky. This is what i would call making Chicken Salad out of Chicken ****!

Calvin Coolidge was born in this house 4 July 1872 Plymouth, VT
Across the street, Vice President Coolidge visiting his parents was awakened by a messenger informing him of the death of President Harding.
The home had no telephone or electricity and Coolidge dressed, came downstairs to this room and by the light of this kerosene lamp and with his hand on this bible,
was administered the Presidential Oath of Office by his father. The time was 2:47 am on 3 August 1923. The President then returned to bed.
