Which is better, the z06 trans in an 02, or a 99 6 speed trans? My z06 trans has 2.73 gears. The 99 trans im looking at is built, and cryo gears and hard parts. It has the stock gearing which is 3.42 i think? Why is a z06 trans so much different to start with, and why is a 99 6 speed a better trans when running high HP? Is the z06 trans lighter weight? thanks

no weight difference, Z06 1,2,3 gears are steeper for quicker acceleration down low, 4th is the same. With big HP you do not need lower gears. Call Rodney and get a built M6, run a 3:42 in the rear.

yeah, called rpm... im running a 2.73 right now, so im geared tall, which I like... dont have to shift as often, and dont have as much wheel spin. After talking for a while, what we came up with is... i need to switch out my 5th and 6th gear. Hes going to cryo everything that needs it, and 5th and 6th will be wider actual gears which can handle extra strain. Right now, he thinks my 4th gear gets to about 165-170ish, which sounds right, so 5th is currently getting me past 200, making 6th useless. He wants to put in a short 5th which would get to 190ish, and a 6th that takes me to 220 at 6800rpm if i have the power. That way my peak power is focused into those mph and rpm ranges so my car will climb faster. Im going to document how much it helps (video), ill be getting to 200 with the gearing i have now, and then with the upgraded gears, and see how much quicker it climbs between 160 and 200 with the new gears vs the old. They are also going to put in the HD output shafts, and do all the other stuff that they normally do.

Another vote for RPM Transmissions (<- forum vendor).

I like my new Level V MN6 transmissions matted to a set of DTE 3.73 gears

RPM all the way,, M6 with 342 or 373 will work just fine..

6th gear is a waste of space for the area I live. Every time I actually get to a point I can put her in 6th I need to downshift because of traffic. Depending on area, you might want to think about downsizing that.
