Default C3 crunchy rear fender repair difficulty

Hi guys,

I was looking at a 71 C3 and for the price it's decent, but these crunches in the rear passenger fender are making me hesitant. If I bought the car I'd want to try and repair these and blend in some color matched paint (the overall paint is a 4/10 anyway). Note that these cracks look OLD. they seem really weathered.

I've never worked with glass mat and resin before. How difficult would it be to get this area looking half decent? Also if there's a relevant thread you guys know of definitely post a link. Thanks!

I think you're looking at a previously repaired area. The way it's broken doesn't follow the regular bonding lines for the panel so that vertical crack at top center is in a repair material like Bondo. It and the lower break don't look like broken factory glass. You can see in the diagram below that the area is a single panel with the only seam being at the top and end bonding strips.

You'll likely end up having to rebuild the panel: removing all previous repair material down to the fiberglass and then reshaping, or replace the entire section outright. How does the inside surface feel and look? It should appear a consistent thickness with only a slight texture of undercoating. The backside can give you an indication of the extent (and quality) of the previous work.

67 72 is a right on - that is an old repair
Only one thing you can do - strip it all down to bare glass and see what hides under neath
That will dictate the repair

Thanks for the responses guys - Sounds like more than I would want to deal with. I was looking at it to potentially buy, and as it turns out the car sold to someone while I asked about this. The search for a driver chrome bumper continues.
