Default Adhesive question

Replacing the hood pad on my 77, one of the pins is missing and I have a replacement but my question is what type of adhesive holds the retainer to the hood? Hopefully I asked this in the correct area. Thanks

YES...you are in the right section of the forum.

I can not remember the FUSOR number right off the top of my head...but...You are looking for an adhesive that will bond metal to SMC.

Contact LORD FUSOR and they can tell you which one is the correct one for that application. The products they sell take special guns to apply due to it being a two part cartridge. this may get a bit expensive for you for a 'one application' scenario.

You can also go to an auto parts store and sometimes they carry a 5 minute epoxy which may also work. Just read to verify that it will adhere to the SMC and also the metal.

You can also stop by a body shop and have them bond it on. You might have to wait a bit for it to set...depending on the product they use and how fast it sets up. Most body shops have the 2 part epoxies due to repairs that require it on today's cars. OR...if in your area you have a trade school that has a body and paint program. Take it by them so the students can learn and you can possibly get it done for nothing...other than your time.

You can use Fusor 116. And the cool thing is you do not need a special gun for the cartridge as it fits in a regular caulking gun. Just make sure that when used to attach metal to SMC or fiberglass that the metal part be bare with no paint or primer on the mating surface.

I know FUSOR is switching many of their product line to this type of cartridge so all you need is a normal caulking gun. Which is why I told the person who posted the question to call them.

GREAT INFORMATION!!!! Thanks for posting it 'persuader'.

Thanks for the information.
Would this be the product to be used on the headlight support bar?
Thanks,

As long as the metal is prepped correctly for the FUSOR 116. Dirty or primed steel will not do. Make sure you cover ALL prepped bare steel...or it will rust. IF concerned...contact a FUSOR rep in your area.

If you apply it to metal that does not meet the requirements listed in the information on the FUSOR site...do not be surprised if you have an issue with adhesion....because as you may not know...it ALL boils down to that 1/1,000,000th of an inch of crap that will cause a product not to bond.

I know FUSOR 112 will give you more work time....if needed.

Dub, so would you think I would need to use the fusor 112, or the 116 like the other person suggested? I wasnt really sure if your latest reply was to my original question or if it was the later guys question. Lastly the clip I need to re-attatch is brand new so there is no old residue anywhere but on the hood. Should I scuff up both surfaces or wont that be necessary? Thanks again for your help

Dude you can use either one 116 or 112. The 112 gives you mork working time. (Dries slower). But with either one one you must make sure the surfaces on the metal parts that are to be bonded be free of paint or primer, grease or anything else. The SMC or fiberglass surface that you are bonding to should also be bare with no paint or primer and roughed up with some 80 grit. Make sure you wipe really well with acetone and brush some of the adhesive on the bare metal to cover the bare spots before you run a bead on the mounting surface.
Check post # 54 of my build thread. Richies 77 Corvette build starts now.

dahn77,

You can use both like 'persuader' mentioned....ACTUALLY I got this post confused with another post that might need more working time. That is my fault and I apologize....but both will work.
