How to smooth rough fiberglass?
I am building a "one of" Corvette custom part by covering a surface with 3 layers of 1 & 1/2 ounce fiberglass. I will need to smooth that surface out so that I can paint it with an automotive paint. The rough fiberglass surface has the proper shape, but I need to fill it somewhat before I start sanding it down. I plan to sand with 40 grit, then 80 grit and follow with a high build primer surfacer.
I was wondering about thinning Bondo with resin? Good idea??

I would not mix bondo with resin.
Use Dynaglass (made by Dynatron) as a rough, high strength, filler. Sand and shape it with 36 grit until you're happy with the shape. Go over it with 80 grit.
Then use Dyna De-Lite as your "bondo". The De-Lite can be shaved as it is hardening with a "cheese grater". Then you use 80 grit to do your final sand.
After that it is ready for a high build primer.

Thanks. Any other input anybody? This thing is a giant football helmet 6 foot tall. I'd rather not take the time to hand apply a filler. I was hoping for a magic mixture of maybe milled fibres/Bondo thinned so I could spray it on with a Shultz gun. Then block sand that and apply high build primer. Any ideas?

Melting Slicks
Fiberglass Evercoat "Slick Sand" is a sprayable polyester filler which might have enough build properties to allow you to smooth out your helmet. requires a large spray tip... contact the manufacturer's tech line to see if it might be what you need.
