Knowing that the clear is quite thin...and buffinig it out may cause more problems than you want. As long as the black is not distrubed...and you have a really good steady hand. I have in the past with some decent to very good results...is to carefully clean the scratch and remove any contaminents...and with an artist brush with minimal hairs on the brush...mix up some clear and add the required hardener...and carefully apply the clear to the scratch to the point that it fills in the scratch...but not so much that it builds up a big hump of clear.
Now it all depends on actually if it is a top surface or if it is on the side. It can be a bit tricky in getting the clear to fill in without getting such a large hump so that when that has cured. It can be carefully block sanded and buffed back to level with the factory paint.
Depending on how soon you get the clear on the scratch..will greatly aid in making sure that the scratch will not show up with a discoloration due to fade out from the UV's from the sun...because it was allowed to not be repaired for some time....and the basecoat color is not protected by the clear coat.
Trying to keep the clear in the scratch is important....and NOT all around the scratch. a little is OK...but not a lot. It will make it harder to get RIGHT.
If the scratch is on the side. You may need to allow the clear to thicken a bit...so it wont run out of the scratch an on the area of the panel that you do not want clear on. And it may take several applications if it is on the side to get the scratch filled...depending on how deep it is and the amount of flash time so the clear will build and not run down and out of the scratch.
Heat gun or heat lamps may aid in getting the clear to set up so other layers can be applied if it is cold while doing it.
A bit of patience will help also.
Best of luck and hope this helped.
