09Z for sale at dealer needs front clip repainted - What To Do?
I flew to San Diego today/Saturday to purchase a silver 09Z w/3,300 miles on it. I got there to find the nose had a dozen or more 2" vertical scratches in the clear coat where some car wash "tech" apparently dropped a heavy water hose on it. In addition there are tons of 'rock chips' on the fenders, hood, nose and mirrors. Rear fenders look pretty good.
QUESTION - Assuming we can agree on price (he wants to charge ME more for the repaint) would you agree to having the dealer (allegedly Vette experts) repaint the front clip of this car???
I got all these 'guaranteed for life' assurances, but meanwhile I live 600 miles away.
There's a current thread about silver Z's and paint issues. Read that, and you'll have a better base to judge from. My guess, and it is just a wild a$$ guess is that you will be disappointed in the quality of the rework and end up passing on the car anyway.
It all depends on how good the body shop is. It CAN be done to where you can never tell it was repainted. I had a part of a door repainted on a metallic silver/grey car and it is not visible in any kind of lighting. The key is they faded the base into the surrounding panel and cleared the whole door. If they shoot base to the edge of the panel it is almost guaranteed to be visible. If the entire front clip needs base, they should shoot base and fade on the doors. Then clear the doors also.
Phil, I answered this in the other section, but will post here to.
I would walk away from this one without ever looking back. Something is not right.
No way should a 3K car have tons of chips, especially at the mirrors. It tells me that if it is really 3k miles it has the living crap driven out of it.
The other BIG warning sign is the fact that the dealer did NOT fix this this stuff before it went out on the lot. I would expect something like that from a dealer on San Carlos/pothole row, but from a reputable dealer, no way.
It could also have been a theft recovery situation, I get them in my detailing shop and you can tell they have been beat to hell.
Another possibility, although less likely, is it was in an accident and they pulled a front end from another silver and slapped it on.

Thanks much Steve - I have walked, nay, ran away. It just chaps my hide that the few Z's I've looked at or had other members check out for me are ALWAYS not the perfect creampuff the phukking liar dealers claim them to be. There should be a law...
