I'm going to refinish the passenger rear quarter and the gas lid on my 93 C4 in my garage and I want to do it with single stage urethane in three passes (sealer and then two topcoats) to keep the dust down. The goal is to quick fix some finish damage to the existing panels until I decide to do the entire thing with either a dupont or ppg 2 stage system later on in a booth. End result will be factory peel, not rubbed down to glass.
In the meantime, does anyone have experience with an off brand urethane product out there such as the ones offered by eastwood or summit? I've even seen a no name single stage kit on ebay for $160 bucks. I used to spray for a living so I'm not worried about laying down an off brand. But, I've been out of the game for a little while and wanted to see what my options are because I see that Dupont ChromaOne is still really expensive! I'll spend the big bucks when I do the whole car later on.
Unless the car has been repainted, the original was BC/CC. I dont know why you wouldnt stay with that. I am a fan of single stage but only when doing the whole job.
My local NAPA has a mixing setup and will mix a quart of Urethane, and provide a teeny can of hardener at $50 the package. Even if you don't have any reducer floating around, you could be into this repair for less than $100. Shop a bit locally before you go online.
I would have to agree with the first poster....I would stick with the BC/CC if it were me. The 2 systems are entirely different from one another, and I can't imagine that the end result would be very pretty. I'd suggest saving your money and finding a local bodyshop that needs the work, and seeing what they can do to repair the paint. They have access to blending clears that will "burn" into the clearcoat that's there, and make for a better repair...even if you are planning on doing a complete repaint somewhere down the road. Just some food for thought there. Good luck either way.
