I have been trying to do a couple small things to build some skills. I painted the top color of my motorcycle tank. It looked kinda crappy in the booth due to not straining the paint and having some loose junk. So I sanded with 1500 and cleaned it real nice. Its now ready for clear. It looks like night and day after sanding. Should this be required to get a nice finish or do you just normally shoot clear over the color without sanding?
Are you using basecoat/clearcoat ? If so, you should apply more base after sanding.
1500 grit is a little fine, maybe use 800-1000 grit to give the clear something more to bite into.
Some people will lightly sand dust nibs out of base coat and apply more color to those areas .
So you need the paint to be freshly sprayed then clearcoated? In other words if I have a problem I should sand it out, then shoot color again and the finish with clear?
If you are using a basecoat/ clearcoat , most basecoats require applying the clear within 24 hrs. Some people let there base sit a few hours or overnight as to let solvents escape.
Do you have product information sheets on the materials you are using ?
I dont for the red Im using on my tank but will be certain to when it comes time for the vette. Guess I'll put on one more coat and shoot the clear tonight.
