My 73 is close to being ready for paint. the car has been stripped and getting ready to sand. What is the best way to paint this car, so i can ask when i go and get some estimates. the color will be an original yellow.

I personally like the basecoat/clearcoat type of paint. Depending on the shop that you use...you may want to see if they are able to get that color mixed in basecoat. Then when you find a shop that will paint it for you...have them spray out a test panel...and have you approve the color...so you do not have any issues when you go to pick it up and the color is off.

Some paint companies may not have the ability to convert the older paint formulas to basecoat...seeing how basecoat came out AFTER your car was built. I have about 10,000 paint chips and if the formula to an older car is not available...I can surely find one that is so close it only takes a little bit of "tweaking" to get it right.

I am not a fan of "single stage" paint. It is good paint...but it does not have the clear to protect it...eventhough some single stage paints can have clear applied over it....but then your paint film can start becoming way to thick. Single stage paint...due to not ahving clear over it....can be stained...and possibly damage teh outer layer...so your paint has a defect. Much like a wood coffee table that does not have a layer of glass over it. If you spill your grape juice on the table...the juice is more likely to stain your wood....but if it had a glass top over it....the juice could not hurt what it cant touch. The clear coat provides protection against the UV's of the sun along with giving a layer of protection to the color coat...so MINOR scuffs can be buffed out of the clear ...as long as these scuffs did not make it through the clear to the basecoat color.
HOPE this helped.
