Default Help, light scrape removal

I have 2 very light scrapes on my rear break light. The scrapes are slight, and are about 1/2" in length, 1/8 to 1/16 wide and do not go into the paint, just on the clearcoat. How do I remove them.

I don't have a buffer but do have a dremel with a buff pad on it. I hate to take it to a body shop ($$$) but want them removed..

Any advise? thank you in advance..
Paula

Paula,

I would try some 3M Finesse It IIor some 3M Rubbing Compound and that should take care of it. If you can feel them with your fingernail, they will likely require some minor wet sanding with some 3000 grit sandpaper and then will polish back up with the products listed above. I usually finish with some Menzerna Intense Polish and Final Polish.

PaulaH,
Be careful on how much you sand with the sandpaper. The clearcoats from the factory are thin....and if you are not cautious...you can go through to the basecoat color.

If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail..like earlier mentioned. You being a painter. You can apply some clearcoat in the scratch and then sand that down and hand polish. I do it often with very good results....along as teh scratch is fresh....and not six months old...and full of contaminents.

Thank you both. Have 2000 grit sand paper. Well get 3000 when I go get my rubbing compound...

I'm going to try Ron's method first, then will move on to the GrandCorvetteMaster's plan if Ronn's doesnt work...If I mess up on both, to the body shop we go!

BTW, I was told when I talked about this, "It's just a car"!

Thanks guys..
Paula

YEAH......RIGHT!!!!

NO, a Honda Accord is just a car. (just using it as an example) A CORVETTE is a part of history....which commands a proper attitude when dealing and talking about a part of Amercain automotive heritage. Owning a CORVETTE put those owners in a collective group of individuals who have CLASS and the LIFESTYLE that ONLY a CORVETE can bring. IT is a BROTHERHOOD/SISTERHOOD of those who KNOW what they own...even if OTHERS do not... and never will understand. Those "mindless wanderers" probably own a car with NO history.

You are so right, unless you own one, have owned one or are a auto enthuiast, they have no clue .

I held my temper and said strongly, "BUT, it is MY car and you know how clean and nice I keep it"!

I tried it... wet 3000 grit sand paper...some 3M Rubbing Compound and then polish..

It's a lot better, but.... Hey, I'm being.... well, you know how we are about our cars..

I have the long break light/spoiler in Victory Red. The places are right in the edge. A few scuffs about 1" long across the top edge of the spoiler, look pretty good and there is a slight hairline scratch that I might fill in with VR paint mixed with clear.

I need to wash my baby and look at it good in the sunlight. I know, I am the ONLY one who will notice it.. (maybe)

OK, this is how it happened..

I'm having work done on house (roof). Went to get mail through garage and door was disconnected. (????).. Thought strange, but I flung it up by hand . There was a piece of siding laying up against the garage door and it fell back on my car... I guess I'm very lucky it wasn't worse.

I have since learned Spanish. When garage door is disconnected means: do not open the door because something is laying up against it!

Had no TV...they took down the dish to replace the siding...but didnt tell me.. More Spanish.... NO TV: means Sattelite dish is down..
