coast-to-coast cannonball run
My wife and I are launching on a coast-to-coast run on Thursday, Connecticut to Portland to Connecticut. We've found some neat looking top down cruising in the Portland area, and I'm wondering if you guys could give us some local knowledge.
Thanks!

One of the most beautiful is hwy 84 along the Columbia Gorge. Corvette roads, waterfalls green forests and beautiful views of the Columbia River. I was really "bummed out" when we moved here from Maui, but on our first tour of the Gorge I told my husband "you know, this is almost as beautiful as Maui!!"
People here are very friendly so you can always pull over and ask for directions!!

Just off Hwy 84 is Historic Route 30 which will have some much slower but twistier traveling. It takes you right by several falls you can see from your car. Better views are had from a short to medium walk/hike.
Along 84 is Rooster Rock, Beacon Rock, Bonneville Dam, Maryhill Museum/Winery and Maryhill Loops Road (Washington side), the oldest macadam asphalt west of the Mississippi River. Oregon is home to more ghost towns than any other state.
Mount Hood stands at 11,250' and can be seen as you approach from the east on a clear day. Mount Adams, Mount Saint Helen's and Mount Raineer can be seen as well if you get high enough to see over the Washington side of the Columbia River.
For a fun drive to the coast you can take Hwy 30 west past Portland to Scappoose. Just on the far side of Scappoose is Hwy 202. Follow it all the way to Astoria for a twisty run through the hills and farm land.
Climb the Astoria Column to get a view of the Mouth of the Columbia River, Graveyard of the Pacific. You can get a glimps of the house they filmed Goonies in while in Astoria. Just don't get to close or the current owner my throw something at you
Hwy 101 south from Astoria to Seaside won't give you a view of the Pacific, but if you drive farther south of Cannon Beach (why is it called that?) you'll get to see some of the Pacific Ocean. Just before you reach Lincoln City you can return to Portland along Hwy 18.
Let us know what your interests are and we can point you in the twisty directions

The Oregon Coast is beautiful. Arguably it's nicer the farther south you go. Cannon Beach IMHO is the nicest place to stay and visit north of Newport and Lincoln City. Eastern and Central Oregon is also scenic and differs much from Portland in that it's high desert.

You didn't mention the route you're taking to Portland. The Columbia River Gorge via 84 is indeed a beautiful drive. Good advice there, to be sure.

Highway 101
If you want to go South down the Oregon coast highway 101 gives you the curves and some great views along the ocean. You can cut over to it from I-5 which runs N/S through Portland.
You can go clear down to Coos Bay and then cut over to Seven Feathers Resort and Casino on I-5. It's not to far from there to Crater Lake with more curves and places to stop along the lake.
You would be parallel to I-5 the major freeway down the coast so can cut back to that when you like.
Sounds like a great trip you are planning. Post some pictures here when you can.

This whole journey is something that really warrants more time than I think you've allowed.

Yep The Oregon Coast is beautiful and worth the drive, provided one has the time. I'm curious though about your rec on the Seven Feathers Casino. Have never been there, but we have stayed at the Mill Casino in North Bend, just a couple miles north of Coos Bay. I've driven most of the roads between 101 and I-5 and they are all great. The road from Roseburg thru Winston on to Coos bay is a favorite. Continuing north on 101 though would allow a very nice view of the Oregon Coast and I might suggest heading back over to I-5 from either Newport or Lincoln City. Then, of course is the wonderful Air Museum in McMinville and the World of Speed in Wilsonville.

From Coos Bay you can take 42 over to I-5 then head south. Don't go through Winston. It's around Canyonville right on East side of I-5. About a 90 mile trip from 101 and Coos Bay. A favorite trip of ours from Lincoln to Coos Bay and then over to Seven Feathers.
Then we head back up I-5 to Portland take the cut around Portland to head back on 84 to Spokane. Sometimes stop at Hood River, might catch some wind surfers on the way.
