Drivers Wanted (Tacoma Wa)
I do volunteer work for Campfire USA and every year they have a fundraiser. Heres the deal I, me, maybe you drive a small truck over to the Yakima Firing center from the port of Tacoma in a convoy. The vehicles are right hand drive and go from small Jeeps to Humvees, one ton Lorrys and bigger. Ugly green army trucks. Most are automatic with diesel power and have AC. Quite a hoot and for a good cause. I just talked with the director and they are 30 drivers down. Contact me at k7mxe@mashell.com or go to google and type in Campfire USA/ORCA and go to that page and click on Convoy. The dates are Wednesday the 29th of Aug to go over and Thu Sep 27 for the return trip. We have a chartered coach to move us back and forth when not driving and food is provided. I myself have done this every year since 2004. And one year I got to drive a armored personal carrier and I can tell you that was a hoot. Doors like a vault and glass a inch thick. That is the exception however.

Tell us more. I mean how does driving military vehicles benefit the Campfire Girls?
What are the correct dates and what is required in terms of proper drivers licensing - like a CDL?
Can I request an Abrams tank?
This whole thing sounds like fun but kinda' strange as well. That bus you describe isn't going to take us to Kabul is it? I'm okay with that if I get the nod on the Tank.
Clearly it's for a worthy organization and I've done volunteer work for them in the past.
Could you at least be a bit more specific?
Thanks

The trucks belong to the Japan Self Defense Forces and they are not allowed to drive them here on our streets but can on the off the road areas of the Army base in Yakima. So the Camp fire group bids of getting them from the port to Yakima and we drive them. They take the bucks and run the summer camp so I am told. No CDL is required but some of the trucks are CDL trucks and those drivers get the same big trucks each year. No tanks and most is small 4 tire jobs with diesel motor, automatic, 4WD, and cloth tops. Most is built by Toyota, Isuzu or Mitsubishi. Good instructions are given and the convoy is escorted by the State Patrol. Hard part is to keep to the right as lot of folks tend to drive more to the center of the road. Usually 4 convoys spaced out with 15 to 20 trucks to the convoy. The AM radios in the trucks suck as set up for Japan use but you can get some stations ok. The old trucks with rubber band linkage are all gone and automatics rule now. The dates are August 29 going over and Sept 27 heading back to the port of Tacoma to be reloaded on a ship. That work Longshore folks do

I did this for about 5-6 years when I lived in the Tacoma area. It is a fun trip and raises money for Camp Fire USA. They also feed you on both the trip over and the return trip. It's too far for me to drive to Tacoma to do it this year. If I was closer I would be there.
