My Garage/Workshop Man Cave Thread
From a prior thread I inquired for opinions on building on my property or buying a garage condo from Garage Plus in Federal Way. My decision is to build on my own property. Friday I applied for the building permit with the City of Lakewood. $1653. So now I'm commited. As soon as the permits come through construction will start. Slab will be 52'X30' for a two car garage (28') and workshop (24'). Floor will be covered with Tuff-Seal tiles (http://www.tuffsealtiles.com/). I'll move my current 4 post lift from the existing attached garage to one bay in the new garage and also install a 2 post lift (http://www.nwsalesgroup.com/product/228.aspx) in the other bay. The ceiling in the garage portion in vaulted, starting at 10' at the garage doors and rising to 15.5' in the center, so pleanty of room for the two lifts. The workshop will have a 10' ceiling throughout.
Needless to say, I'm really excited about this project and will post progress reports with pictures once construction starts.

Pat, I haven't decided on the skylights yet. I may put two over the garage portion, but the workshop has a 2nd level for storage, so I can't put any there. As far as light goes, the garage will have 24 4' dual flourescent fixtures so there will be plenty of light.

Fred,
You've thought of everything but the built in beer taps! A man cave of this magnitude has to have a place to sit with a cold frosty one and plan the next mod.

I believe the cost of the permit is tied to the square footage of the building.

Shop
Fred, Have you made plans for a heating and cooling system? What type of construction? Insulation?
The reason I ask is when I built my shop I made 3 mistakes.... 1. no restroom........ 2. Built a polebarn construction metal building. lets just say refridgerator in the winter.... 3. No thoughts of heating and cooling. I thought I would have this great workspace in the winter and it turned out to be a Icebox that was alway's 10-15 deg colder or hotter than outside. Since then I have almost solved two of the three problems. I sprayed the inside with foam insulation and sheetrocked it. Then I had a heatpump installed. My shop is 50 by 72 and has 4 bay doors but there is no way any heating or cooling system can keep up with it. It costs me 500/mo in the winter to keep it at a chilly 50deg. and in the summer with the heatpump working full time the best it can do is maintain 75deg. Luckily like you I am in the northwest and we only have severe temps 2mo in the winter and 2 months in the summer so not that big of a deal. The third item No bathroom I have not bit the bullet and solved yet. When you have 7-8 guy's over playing with cars and or BBQ it is a pain to have to track in and out of the house for a restroom. My shop is 50 yards from the house and yours looks a little closer but you will still have the wife looking at strangers and freinds in the house.
Just some thoughts for you. Congrats on the Man Cave.
