Default A Bit of Trivia - Indulge Me

Okay, I'm bored as can be. My wife is recovering from surgery and I'm sitting around with little to do, save watching Law & Order reruns. (not that it's all that bad mind you). In my past few years of Corvette ownership. I'm met some really wonderful people and I've also found that many of you -okay, some of you, okay a few of you - appear to have been around the block a few times. So, just for fun, let's see how many of you can remember the following: (no prizes unless I can find something appropriate up here in my loft/clubhouse)

1. At What intersection or location was The Spanish Castle?

2. Name at least 4 bands that played at the Spanish Castle (or the Crescent Ballroom, or Parker's...)

3. For many years during the 60's and 70's a Chevrolet dealer in Burien sponsored cars in sports car racing, drag racing and even Indy. What was the name of that dealer? Bonus: at least one of the sports cars they sponsered in road racing - and drag racing sometimes - was chevrolet-powered and yet not built by General Motors. What was it?

4. Who is/was Larry Webb and where is he today?

5. The drag strip near Puyallup was actually at a place called what?

6. What was the most popular crusing spot during the 60's in

Portland

Burien

Seattle's University District

The Rainier Valley

Salem

Renton

7. The Community of White Center, southwest of Seattle was commonly known as what?

8. What was Jerry Ruth's nickname (Ruth was a popular AA/fuel dragster driver)

9. Which car club was most associated with the drag races at Arlington (WA - north of Everett)?

10. Which famous drag racing legend from the NW was known as "The Ace"?

11. Who did the best recording of "Louie Louie"?

Don and the Goodtimes

Rockin' Robin Roberts and the Fabulous Wailers

Paul Revere and the Raiders

Richard Berry

12. Where were the annual Seafair sports car races usually held before the track at Kent - Seattle International Raceways (WA) was built?

13. How Many "Funny Cars" were usually associated with the annual event at Pacific Raceways in Kent (WA) when Bill Donner ran the place?

14. Where is Jimi Hendrix buried? Bruce Lee?

15. What is the primary difference between road races at Portland International Raceways and at Seattle International Raceway? (not a rules question, really)

16. How many dance venues in the Northwest can you name that were not around after the early 70's?

17. Name as many colors (according to the catalog) that were available on the 1967 Corvettes. (not just red, white...)

18. Why am I still up this late?

Thanks all of you who have taken the time to peruse this. Not every question has one correct answer. I'm just interested to see what comes back.

I'm going to bed now....

I only have a few answers off the top of my head.

No. 3 is Allen Green Chevrolet and they raced a Cheetah.

No. 5 must be the Airport that the strip was next to.

No. 8 is Jerry (The King) Ruth.

No. 10 is Ed (The Ace) McCulloch and is still involved in racing.

No. 13 was (64) Funny Cars and when they all started their engines at the same time on the strip the place rocked.

No. 15 might be that most turns at Seattle are left handed and most turns at Portland are right handed.

1) Hwy 99 and Des Moines Way

2) Sonics, Kingsmen, Springfield Rifle, Ventures

5) Thun Field?

7) Southgate?

8) The King

10) Ed McCulloch

11) Wailers version of Richard Berry's song.

12) Bremerton

13) 64

14) Renton, Seattle

16) Evergreen Ballroom, Camelot, Crescent Ballroom, Century Ballroom

17) Rally Red, Marina, Lynndale and Elkhart Blue, Goodwood Green, Sunfire Yellow, Tuxedo Black, Marlboro Maroon (my fav) and I don't remember what the White and Silver colors were called.

18) I have no excuse

Thanks for stirring some fond memories.

# 6 - Cruising Rainier Valley
I can't remember the name of the big Drive-In on Rainier, but the cruising was from there to the I-90 tunnel where you could show your ride off to very enthusiastic spectators.

Let's see:

#4 Had to cheat on this one but some very interesting info. http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?showtopic=102547 I remember him from the Historics at PR. At the link, there is a pic of the Alan Green Cheetah at Shelton. Our Association (NWACC) holds autocross events there as does a few clubs of the WWSCC.
.
#5 Thun Field but the runway was a good 1/2 mile or so away. Spent a lot of Wednesday nights there for grudge racing with my '69 Road Runner. We used to sneak guys in on Saturday nights by stuffing a couple guys in the trunk of my '54 Ford. Too cheap to afford the entry fee.

#10 Ed "The Ace" Mc Culloch

#13 64 FUNNY CARS!! Still remember that commercial

#15 PIR runs clockwise, SIR runsd counterclockwise. And PIR was flat while SIR had elevation changes. And no trees at PIR!

#16 Evergreen Ballroom for one. (burned down in the late 90's IIRC) This place was so old, my mom went there in the late 30's and early 40's to watch and dance to the "Big Bands".

Wow! Thanks for cheating. This link was wonderful and nearly brought tears to my eyes. Great stuff. In fact I was not aware of Larry's participation with AAR. The last time I saw him was at my wedding in 1969 and a few years later at Laguna Seca at the Can-Am races. I believe he was crewing for John Gunn's Lola team (the Ex-Jackie Stewart L&M-sponored car)

The popular cruise spot in Portland back then was either cruising downtown on Broadway or around the Tic Toc on Sandy Blvd. I wasn't doing any crusing until 71, at that time, Broadway was the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights.

Default A Bit of Trivia - The Answers...well sorta'

I decided to start a new thread with the answers to my little NW Trivia quiz. That way others can still try and answer the original post and then refer to this one to check their answers.

Let me say that I was amazed at how many of you could answer these silly questions. Some of you even added information I had not seen before. (thank you George).

Hope you had as much fun as I did... Here's the answers (or at least the ones I was expecting)

1. At What intersection or location was The Spanish Castle?

Highway 99 and Kent-Des Moines Rd in Midway (south of Sea-tac airport)

2. Name at least 4 bands that played at the Spanish Castle (or the Crescent Ballroom, or Parker's...)

I received some answers I had not expected and assume they are valid. I was thinking more along the lines of

The Fabulous Wailers with Gail Harris and Rockin Robin Roberts

The Frantics

Tiny Tony and The Statics (with a one time young guitarist sitting in named Jimi Hendrix)

The Dynamics

Hard to go wrong on this one...

Didn't fool many of you with this one. Alan Green was the dealer the car in question was a Cheetah. In fact I recall Green had two of these monsters, one for road racing, which survives today, and a street car he used for drag racing.

4. Who is/was Larry Webb and where is he today?

Larry Webb was a well-known mechanic in the south Seattle area who, at one time, worked for Dan Gurney's All-American Racers and crewed on many race teams, including John Gunn's Can-Am Lola (the ex-Jackie Stewart L&M car). I understand he is working today in a shop in Renton.

5. The drag strip near Puyallup was actually at a place called what?

Thun Field, a small airport south of Puyallup

6. What was the most popular crusing spot during the 60's in

This one produced some really good answers, I presume all of them correct.

Portland

I was looking for Yaw's drive-in

Burien

Lou's at the corner of 1st Ave So and 152nd St.

Seattle's University District

The Burgermaster near University Village and, ocasionally, Herfy's

The Rainier Valley

I was looking for Kuehnoel's drive-in just south of Sick's Stadium on Rainer Ave. Dag's at the intersection of Rainier and Empire Way was also popular. Special credit to nelliestar for reminding me of the tunnels on I-90 leading onto the floating bridge.

Salem

I have no idea and can't recall why I even mentioned this

Renton

I was looking for Dag's, but mixermike reminded me of cruising the loop too. Thinking way far back, before I was old enough to drive, even, there was a drive in approximately where the Wal-Mart and/or the Honda dealer are now located in Renton. Can't remember the name of it though.

7. The Community of White Center, southwest of Seattle was commonly known as what?

mixermike nailed this one. Rat City.

8. What was Jerry Ruth's nickname (Ruth was a popular AA/fuel dragster driver)

Easy; "The King"

9. Which car club was most associated with the drag races at Arlington (WA - north of Everett)?

I was looking for the Travel-Ons.

10. Which famous drag racing legend from the NW was known as "The Ace"?

Most of you got this. Ed McCullough

11. Who did the best recording of "Louie Louie"?

Don and the Goodtimes

Rockin' Robin Roberts and the Fabulous Wailers

Paul Revere and the Raiders

Richard Berry

No right or wrong answer to this one, but even though Don and The Goodtimes are most often associated with the rock and roll version of Richard Berry's calypso original, they recorded what most would admit was the version earlier arranged by Rockin' Robin and the Wailers. Unlike the Wailers, D&GT travelled more extensively and were arguably more commercially successful and received the prmotion and, accordingly, the credit. Paul Revere also did a great version.

Personally I loved the Rockin' Roberts/Wailers version. Probably the first rock and roll arrangement ever recorded of the song and, as some of you know, was the version promoted by many Washington residents to become the state's offical song. (it even says so on the sign at some rest stops between Seattle and Portland)

12. Where were the annual Seafair sports car races usually held before the track at Kent - Seattle International Raceways (WA) was built?

Bremerton. Some very famous drivers and teams competed there, including Carroll Shelby in a Ferrari and, I think, Phil Hill among others. There were also races at Shelton

13. How Many "Funny Cars" were usually associated with the annual event at Pacific Raceways in Kent (WA) when Bill Donner ran the place?

64 Man, how that famous radio spot has remained in our memories for so very long.

14. Where is Jimi Hendrix buried? Bruce Lee?

Knob Jockey nailed it. Renton and Seattle respectively.

15. What is the primary difference between road races at Portland International Raceways and at Seattle International Raceway? (not a rules question, really)

I was looking for; SIR runs counter clockwise and PIR runs clockwise. Bonus points to C4 Cruiser for reminding me of the elvation changes at SIR

16. How many dance venues in the Northwest can you name that were not around after the early 70's?

No wrong answers here and, frankly, some of them I had in mind might actually still be around. Here's the ones I remember:

The Spanish Castle

Crescent Ballroom in Tacoma

Evergreen Ballroom near Olympia

Seven Cedars in Mt Vernon (or was it just the Cedars?)

Pearl's in Bremerton

Hollywood Bowl in New Westminster, Canada

Lake Hills Roller Rink

The Roller (something) in Lynnwood

The Silver Seagull in Aberdeen (on the road out to the beaches)

The A-Go-Go in Seattle

Pat O'Days Party Line near Pioneer Square in Seattle

I'm sure there were many more...

17. Name as many colors (according to the catalog) that were available on the 1967 Corvettes. (not just red, white...)

Kudos to Knob Jockey on this one. I think he's right on. Admittedly, when I decided to post this question I thought I had a book around here with all the answers. I don't so will go with KJ's answers. Nice Job.

Thanks all of you who have participated in this exercise. I was just trying to have a little fun, but some of the responses I received had me recalling the old times I enjoyed so much back then.

Phil
