Default after market shifter questions

do any of you guys have after market shifters in your c5 vettes? & if so are they hard to shift in to reverse?
My hsubands vette it takes 2 hands to throw the car in to reverse but all the other shifts are smooth as silk.

We had it in at the dealership today & they couldnt figure out what was wrong with it other then the fact that it might have been the shifter it self.

do we go out & buy another shifter or do we find out if something is wrong wtih this one?

I have a Hurst shifter in my 02. Hurst shifters are known to be "firm" and notchy but they come with extra springs to cut down on the pressure it takes to move the lever side-to-side.

Reverse is not that hard for me, but it does take slightly more effort than shifting into say 6th gear.

What shifter is in the car? The B&M shifter is supposed to be smoother and has a lighter effort.

One trick would be to use the stock C6 shifter. It cuts the throw length down some and is just as easy to shift as a stock C5 shifter.

Nope. Just at the swap meet. But I've known the folks at CHP for years.

Just called Titus will to see if they have a stock C6 shifter in stock & they said we were nuts since its a diff parts number, to get the parts numbers everyone is using because the C5 & C6 shifters will not work together.

Oh ok lol Don thought it might have been george (is that your name?)

I love dealing with don & larry & those guys down there

That's what you get for going to a dealer and asking about swapping parts. If they were to set stock C5 and C6 shifters side-by-side they would see the similarities, especially the bottom part.

The C6 shifter will work. The difference between the two is that the C6 Shifter is shorter and therefore the throws between gears is less. That makes it feel like an aftermarket shifter but there will not be the stiffness you find in the aftermarket version. One issue would be the shifter knob. The threads on the C5 handle and the C6 handle are different so you would have to use the C6 knob or an aftermarket knob made for the C6 handle.

I did a search in C5 Tech and came up with these:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...4&forum_id=103

and

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...1187875&page=2 Look at post #38. The comparisions show that the bottom of the shifter (plate and the shaft with the ball) are the same.

Oh yeah, that's me! Don is an excellent guy to deal with; lots of knowledge and goes out his way to help.

I don't know about the MOMO question. Below is a link to a CF Sponsor that sells the C6 shifter. Note it says for both C5 and C6. It says "package" so I would think that includes the knob ($60) but check before buying. You can't use the stock C5 knob without modifying it and the C6 knob is much better anyway. The only thing that's even slightly tricky is getting the stock shift boot to work and look stock. I've posted several times how to do it easily. You might be able to find those threads in the archives. If not, and you do indeed buy this and can't figure out how to get the boot looking good shoot me a PM. It's really simple (once someone points out how to do it) and looks perfect.

FWIW, if the problem is the shifter and you are going to change it out, you might as well look at the MGW shifter sold by a forum vendor. (Search the tech section)

I think it's about $220.00 but this shifter makes the stock shifter look like Pee Wee Herman compared to the Terminator.

I put one in my C6 and was absolutely amazed at the quality of this product compared to stock. Shifts are short, firm and no wobbles or rattle.
