Default OOPS...I think I broke something!

Holy Crap! I really had a great time out at PIR on Monday. Nice to see Jim and Gary driving their cars like they are meant to be driven.

But...I started the car up yesterday and heard a noise that I DO NOT LIKE!

Kind of a high-pitched metal to metal sound similar to the sound of a water pump bearing going out.

I hope it's something minor, but a buddy of mine suggested a spun bearing.

Taking it to the dealer tomorrow....

Sorry to hear about that Todd. If you did spin a bearing, you would have low oil pressure and it would be knocking. So hopefully it's just something that bolts on. Let me know if you need any help.

There is no knock, and oil pressure is fine so it is probably something minor, something loose or an alternator, water pump etc.

Thanks for the offer, Jim! I'll keep you informed.

If you spun a bearing you would know it, it's pretty distinctive sound.
I'd really be suprised if that were the case.

I'm betting its a alternator bearing, water pump, A/C clutch, belt tensioner bearing ---OR--- the dreaded muffler bearing!

Everyone knows track days are hell on muffler bearings!

Good Luck!!!

Hope it's not serious Maybe an idler pulley or tensioner.

Don't tell the dealer what you were doing or where you were (uinless maybe you go out to Suburban).

My 87 survived another great track day with no noises or problems. My first time in the Advanced group and it was loads of fun.

Ah....that's a "winter project."

Of course last night, as I was preparing for the worst, I was eye-balling some of those nice all forged stroker short blocks that are available.

Looks like I'll have to wait until I do some REAL damage.

If your car is under warrantee hopefully you take it to a mod friendly dealer, or a dealer who ignores the mods, because many are not fans of aftermarket mods

Based on the various expert opinions, it is probably something loose, or just a bolt on replacement item. PITA but nothing life changing.

So far I haven't had any problem w/ Wilsonville Chevrolet. However, if they do give me crap, to bad for them. I'll take my business elsewhere.

Like you, when I'm looking for another car.

Hey Todd, Enjoyed seeing you and Amy this last weekend. Sounds like something very minor, like maybe a alternator bearing, or some little stupid thing like that. No worries Todd, trust me if it were a spun bearing, which it is nooooot, there would be no question of enternal noise. Good luck dude, let us know about this little situation. Gary

I hope it is not the crank bolt. The 2005 are famous for the crank bolt loosening up. Well, if it is, it covered under warranty.

Good luck!

I think you diagnosed it. I read some of the posts and then watched the crank pulley as my engine idled. That pulley has a definate wobble to it.

Added to that, my car was an early build with a vin number in the "bad" range.

I'd put money on your assessment.

I wonder if it will make it to the dealership?

Hey C4, is your C4 the gold colored car with the square exhaust tips?
What exhaust system do you have on your car? I thought it sounded great. How did the car do on the big track Monday?

I had a bit of valve floating down the front stretch at around 120mph.

My 30yr old car ran great on the Auto-X Sunday and did fine Monday on the big track but, the car was showing its age against the Porsches & Zo6's...

Seriously...When I was on the back stretch I got passed by the black Porsche & two yellow Zo6's like I was sitting still. I was going around 100mph at that point and those three cars had to have been scooting at 150???

Who had the two Yellow Zo6's in the Intermediate B group? Are they forum members? D@mn...Those cars are FAST!

Is the crank pulley rubbing on something? If it's wobbling, then that could mean it's barely on there and about to come off the end of the crank. But it would be sticking out a long ways and your belt would be at a severe angle, and trying to jump.
I don't know about the Ls2 motors, but the LS1's have been known to seperate the pulley from the crank hub. This would also give a wobbling effect. If it's making a noise, I don't think I would drive it. Not far anyway's. You need to find out where the noise is coming from. Something must be rubbing. I would hate to see that thing come off as you are driving it.
If you want, I could come by after work and look at it, and bring some tools. Maybe we can tighten it up to get you to the dealer. I don't know about the C6's, but on the C5's, you have to remove the steering rack to get a socket on the bolt. But I have a wrench that might work, but would be limited on how tight we could get it.
Anyway, keep me informed. Let me know if you need some help.

Jim

That was me in the gold 87. The exhaust is stock excelpt for the Mid-America muffler Eliminators. Only real problem I had with mine was hitting the rev limiter at the end of the main straight. With only 4th gear and not using the OD, all I could get was about 123-124 before the 500-foot braking marker. Still fun even if I couldn't run with the big dogs This was my 8th year at the RCC track day.

The two yellow Z06's belonged to Corvette Marque Club members. CF member TAC had the yellow C5 Z06 and rode with me once and I got some great pointers from him. He's been to Spring Mountain and brought that experience with him.

I watched your car in the autoross and the track day B group and it certanl looked fast. Very nice ride
