Rodent damaged wires in engine bay!
Has anyone had a rodent damage the wiring harness in their engine bay? We have a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe and a rodent chewed through the wires. Car runs but the airbag light and cameras don't work.
The dealership is saying its $6K to fix by replacing the entire wiring harness.
I've made an insurance claim w/ Progressive and we have full coverage. I think it should be covered under the comprehensive, but Progressive guy said he doesn't think it's covered.
So has this happened to anyone and was it fixed under insurance?
I don't need a bunch or replies saying "they should cover it, etc". I want to hear if people have successful had their insurance pay for the repairs.
Thanks,
Jason

Well my neighbor has Volvo and this happened to her. Insurance covered the complete repair. I cost over 4k.

In my experience with Progressive, whatever the marketing people say is exactly worthless...Progressive Marine policy, struck a submerged object, engine failed internally, obvious damage (bent prop), scratches to cowlings = Progressive denied coverage after a 90 day fight.
I hope this works out better for OP

Progressive has specialized in covering high risk drivers for decades.
Maybe they need the money for them...

Had the same problem in my wife's Mercedes. Got a brake warning light when all the brake parts were in great shape. Ends up the little f'rs had nested in the engine compartment. I found a local non-dealer who replaced parts of the harness a wire at a time so it was below our deductible.
Glad you got yours covered.

The best safety procedure to do is monitor your car by rodent smell and by keeping the hood open when garaged! Also look for tears in any wire covering. I use peppermint spray and cotton ***** soaked in this oil. Quite expensive to purchase but better than a no start due to rodents eating your wiring harness. Also a clean interior of car with no food droppings help!

Thanks for the comments. We have a 4 year old so it's difficult to keep the food smell out. She's always dropping french fries and other stuff in the car. It's the wife's daily vehicle and it's parked outside. We had 1 cold spell in February and I suspect that's when it happened.
The SUV is still at the shop waiting on Hyundai to supply the wiring harness.

A lot of newer (especially Japanese) vehicles are using soy-based insulation on wires, which apparently attracts rodents. I'm a bit concerned about this, as we just bought a Mazda and mice are common in our area.

I've done some research on this problem and found a few solutions:
Honda 4019_2317 rodent tape
through your vehicle’s wiring, wrap the wires with Honda rodent deterrent tape 4018-2317. The rodent deterring tape is impregnated with a chemical that’s similar to chili pepper.
Mice, rats and other rodents may bite into the tape once, but they’ll back off immediately. The tape is treated with capsaicin (active component in chili peppers).

Rodent Resistant Side Entry Cable Wrap Sleeving with Hook & Loop Fastener | 1/2" to 4" Sizes (electriduct.com)
