Question for Dodge Ram owners
My nephew is looking to replace his 13 Silverado. He had great luck with that truck, but does not like the newer GM trucks
interior. He is going to look at a new Dodge Ram. Is their V6 any good or should he get the Hemi?
Appreciate the advice.

I would get the v8. The Pentastar v6 is underpowered in a Ram, in my opinion. Your nephew needs to drive each back to back. I am on my third Ram and I don’t have any real complaints. There are several good Ram forums. I would search or ask at one of them. I have never owned a Pentastar powered Ram so I can’t give you a reliability feedback.

Bought my 2022 Ram in December. I was a Chevy guy my whole life but Ram is building a better truck right now. Five seconds in the interior and you can see why. I'm only 6,000 miles in but so far I love it. It's drives better and quieter than any truck I've ever had. I would definitely suggest the Hemi. My Hemi has the eTorque system which is basically an alternator on steroids. The V6 doesn't offer much better mpg and the Ram is a heavy truck to lug around on six naturally aspirated cylinders.

The v6 is lacking in the grand Cherokee. It's miserable in the ram.
Etorque is the reason keeping us out of a wagoneer.. Lots of issues with them on wagoneer forums. I'd have taken the worse fuel economy for a cheaper price and no Etorque.

My pick:
Get the standard 5.7 Hemi (no E-torque) (If the E-torque was that great it would cost more than the standard hemi)
By all means get the 3.92 rear gears, (It comes with the max tow pack)(And no it won't really affect the MPG's as you have multiple OD ratios and it pulls heavier loads much better)
Get the larger fuel tank, (33 gallons)
Avoid the air suspension if you live in cold climates as they are troublesome there.
Get the anti-spin rear differential (I have no experience with the electric locking version)
At least get the brake controller or other tow package with.
Other options are up to your.
My 2016 Laramie Longhorn is by far the best truck I have ever owned.
Now get out there and go drive one.

My 2018 Laramie has been great. Tow package but no trailer brake. 3.92 gears with the anti spin rear. It's been a a really good vehicle.
Having driven the E-Torque all I can say is that the extra power off the bottom is nice to get moving. Needed? Probably not but I wouldn't say no to it.

Something to note is the mpg on the Ram isn't the best. Mine has the 3.92 rear and I live in an area with no flat land which explains a lot of it. But my Silverado with the 6.2 had more power, more torque, and got better mileage. That being said the Silverado took premium while my Ram takes regular unleaded so I'm still spending less on gas overall. The Ram is still a better truck in pretty much every single way and no one is buying a truck for fuel economy anyways.

I had a Jeep Wrangler 3.6 and a Ram 1500 5.7 4x4 with 3.92’s. My girlfriend would drive the Jeep and I would follow in the Ram to OBX on weekends. The two got almost identical gas mileage.
I would go with the 5.7 and 3.92’s. I now have a 20 Power Wagon 6.4 and that thing is a gas hog.

The V5 has (had) issues with some tensioner/cam solenoid something to that effect. Not sure what yrs it affects
Ex's kid is a big Jeep fan his engine was making some nasty taps at 32kish miles. Cant imagine that engine in a heavy truck
Its not bad in say a Charger but thats it.
Didnt know the Rams have come that far. KNow they handle turn and brake 10x better than Chevy or did yrs ago when I was looking
Do the V8s still have issues with the valvetrain and timing chains?
A std cab V8 wtih the 3.92 could be a lo tot of fun and probably good resale Level/drop is a few inches, tint and hes got a slick ride.

The 5.7 and 6.4 still have issues with lifters because of the cylinder deactivation stuff, just like GM.

I have a 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7 w/ eTorque. 24k miles with no issues. This truck is so freaking nice. I average 17mpg with a mix of hills, stop and go traffic, and freeway driving at 80+ mph. I love this truck and would buy another in a heartbeat.

Great! The only tough part will be waiting. I nearly ordered one but wait times have varied between two and eight months with what seems like no rhyme or reason. it will be worth it when it arrives.

Nice! I'm guessing it's the Night edition! That's what I have. Love this freaking truck all blacked out with the pearl white paint.
