What do you think of Porsche 914's?
I know they were no performance monster but if you have any experience with them, what do you think of them overall? Build quality, handling etc.

The rare 6 is a bomb, the regular 4 not so much, but still a solid performer with go-kart handling and build quality of an early VW Bug, which means excellent. They are under rated solid little cars that are easy to work on, get good MPG, and are fun to drive.

I drove one a long time ago, the 4 banger, and it was like a little go kart. Not fast, but great for handling.
I imagine a turbo charged 4 banger, or a 6 cylinder swap would be easy enough.
