This is an interesting comparison test from Car and Driver... just diesel versions... but they talk about the transmissions. The say that the GM version of the 10-speed works better than Ford's. But then they go and rate the Ram as the overall winner, Silverado second. Chevy just needs to update the interior and features to take the crown.

Yeah Chevy really dropped the ball on the new interior in the trucks. My buddy just bought a 2020 Silverado and the interior is definitely okay. But it's no nicer than my 2017 with the exception of the updated infotainment system and it should be since it's newer. The new Tahoe/Yukon interior is really nice, though. Hopefully it makes its way down into the trucks soon.

What year are you looking at? Probably older than you want but the 00-02 5.3 were some of the best built most reliable trucks Chevy ever made. (best looking imo).
Finishing a restoration of my 02 I bought new.
Bought a 99 and 00 S-10....the 4.3 is a torquey engine but returned both quickly.
Transmissions, heater cores blowing up immediately went F/S never looked back.

Lots of these trans have issues with solenoids getting sticky and making them do goofy chit. Trans guy had me flushing mine every 15k-20k adding a bottle of Lucas non slip ea time hasnt happened in years.

OP, you don't want one of those sissy Chevys! Get a RAM and see what all Chevy pickup owners are missing. www.ramforum.com is a very good forum. I have a 1500 Crew Cab that has treated me very well.

LOL... I am REALLY a sissy these days still loving my Toyota Tacoma. I may get another one... or wait and see what comes out in a another year or 2. I'd seriously consider a Tundra but the current generation gas mileage is abysmal. I know, you don't buy them for the mileage, but 13 city? Please. To me that would be unlivable. Hoping they improve the powertrains or maybe have some hybrid tricks up their sleeve for the next gen.

I had read a story about the Tundra issue with gas mileage. That is kind of a mystery as to why Toyota can't do better then that. Maybe they don't want to spend the money on the issue. Isn't Toyota working on a new Tundra? My RAM gets over 20 at 70mph on the highway.

Toyota MPG is the one thing that really has me looking at full size trucks. The Tacomas don't get great MPG either. My 2009 2nd gen 4.0L V6 is rated 16 city 19 highway, but I actually get about 22 on real highway driving. Decent but not great. I don't really need the extra towing capacity but for about the same $ as a Tacoma you can get a full size that gets about the same MPG and has far more capability. But then you lose the Toyota reliability which I have come to value highly. <sigh> There is something about having one vehicle that all you do is change the oil, brakes and tires periodically and just drive it. I don't mean for a couple of years I mean for more than 10 years.

Its a heavy truck they arent supposed to get good mpg in the city. I avg 12 around town in a bone stock 5.3
Hwy sure its closer to 19 20 not bad. Anyone remember trucks that were lucky to see 12 hwy? Ex;s '13 F150 with the 5.0 only gets 1 mpg better & is already having electrical/heating/valvetrain issues with 22k miles on it.

Too many cam and valve seat issues on the ram for me to consider. They turn handle and stop well but couldnt give me one.

Hell, I had a 1978 Trans Am that got only between 13 and 14 MPG on the highway. It's big problem was that with the 4-speed manual trans with 1:1 top gear (no overdrive) it was really revved up at highway 70+ speeds. The C7 gets literally twice as good MPG on the highway and is much much faster. Trucks of that generation suffered from the same issues... carburetors and lack of overdrive.

That, and the prices of mid size trucks are getting so darn high. After accounting for the discounts that are always available on most full size trucks these days, it's hard to buy a mid size for the same price.

2021 trucks are supposed to get the new dash like the Tahoe/Yukon. We haven't got any in yet, but since I bought a 2020 2500 I'd say its a safe bet they will get the new dash because thats my luck lol.

Used to have a 454 dually crew cab with 4.10s...know all about that. But loved that damn thing
I dont pay any attention to mpg on trucks, cant expect much with a V8 and weighing over 2 tons. Were spoiled with tech these days.

GM Authority reported this week that the new interior has been delayed to 2022 to coincide with the facelift. Seems accurate with all the COVID delays. I've tossed around the idea of trading for an RST when the new interior hits. The 6.2 and 10-speed combo is tempting...
