Default Should I buy a Viper RT/10?

1993-1995 Vipers... All down in the high $20k's now.... with low mileage. Always wanted one since I was a kid. The only thing I don't like is the center console pushes your feet all the way to the left and doesn't leave much room. Seems like somebody could mash the brake pedal instead of the clutch on accident. I also hate the roof set up. Anyone own a Viper here RT/10 here? More fun than the Corvette?

For the money that is that would be a nice cruiser and cool looking. Fun to drive depends on what your driving style is. I have only ever driven a 2015 and to me I didn't like it all that much for my driving style. I did not like the way I sat in the car and the handling feel.

The answer is yes, as long as you've got good life insurance.

There's really no modern car that delivers the same sort of experience. It's like fighting a Grizzly.

At those prices, you will likely never lose a dollar on it when you sell it.

It's a fun car to drive in the sense that it's a bit of a handful to drive at 10/10th's. They are also quite crude from a comfort standpoint, think of it as a production kit car. With that being said they are very fun as long as you know what to expect. I agree that you will not lose a penny if you buy one and decide a year or so down the road it's not the car for you. Couple of buddies had them and we would often swap cars, I spent many miles behind the wheel of my friend's 95.

It is a very fun car, much more fun than a C5/C6 IMO. They get many more looks.
The pedals are a non-issue once you're in the car.
It is not a perfect car. There are a lot of things you have to ignore to enjoy it (interior quality, radiating heat, joke of a top, ergonomics, tiny trunk, etc.

If you're considering a gen1; either make sure it has new head gaskets or budget for replacing them, change out to gen2 exhaust manifolds/headers or aftermarket, go with a high flow cat and get some good brake pads.

Not necessary, but really make the car have better turning and braking characteristics: coilovers, R888 and upgrading the front brakes and putting the front brakes on the back.

My Wife had this '94 for about five years. Street or track I loved driving it.

I have driven many, they are fun for a few hours. I would not want to spend all day in them but at that price I find it hard to pass up. If you have the $$$$ I don't see you loosing. On a side note I don't recall but, I believe it was the 96-97 cars that had forged internals in the motor I believe that was the 450 HP cars I could be wrong. Someone may chime in with better info on those. Let us know what happens

Everything White out said. I've got a '94 and its not without its compromises but its an absolute blast and gets more looks than pretty much any corvette (if thats what you want). You'll likely not lose a dime on them right now though. Definitely check into the head gaskets. I've driven mine across the country and back and its not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

It's certainly a show car for the street. You will be a rock star every where you go.

For that kind of money....live the dream.

Let us know how you make out.

Just my opinion... I've owned two Vipers, a 99 ACR with Roe Blower, and a 98 GTS stock. Vipers are more a kin to old school muscle cars. High torque, point them in the direction you want them to go, hit the gas, and hope it goes that way. They are fun and flashy, but truth be told not all that pleasant to drive regularly. Bottom line, lots of looks, fun to drive in small doses, not a car for novice drivers, suspect braking, more hot rod that road car.

I own a 01 ACR. The C5 Z06 is a better car in everyway except looks.

Viper-Cons
hot
cramped
hard to get in out
burns you getting out
suspension really stiff/bumpy
spins instead of drifts
people won't leave you alone
can't park it anywhere

Viper-Pros
Awesome looking
easy to work on
cheap insurance
cheap registration

I would go 1997-02 GTS for a little more coin. 450HP, an actual roof and the GTS IMHO looks way better...

I also want to make the move. Another thing to look into is the crank sensor. It's a common fail item so I read, and they are no longer in production.

Not sure if there is a work around now.

Personally I like the most raw car possible and I love having something different. There are two other c5s just in my neighborhood and the guy 5 houses down even bought one the same color. All guys in their 50s-60s, which is fine as they make a great CAR. But I'm sick of seeing them all over.

I actually see more corvettes on the road than my older (95) mustang.

Viper or AC Cobra for me next
