Porsche Cayenne S
I'm thinking of a new DD/winter driver, probably next year. I currently have a GMC Canyon 4x4. I'm reasonably happy with a basic 4x4 pickup, but a full size truck won't fit in the available space like the Canyon does, and there aren't many "mid sized" 4x4s anymore. At the same time, my wife is lobbying me to get something more stylish.
I was thinking of a Porsche Cayenne S. Anybody have any personal experience with one?

........but....remember it's not buying one of these ..it's owning it....the maint and repairs are gonna hurt ya! I have looked at them several times and there are some amazing buys on them...but I ended up w a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It does everything I need very well and isn't gonna hurt me to bad in the maint/repair department either.

I was thinking about one of them, but I have a absolute wacko neighbor who drives Jeeps, and I don't want to associate with ANYTHING he would do....

Over 40 years ago I had my first ride in a sports car and it was a 911, loved them ever since.
Since then I have seen many 2nd tier Porches (non 911) come and go .......914, 924, 944, 928 even older Boxters have become a bit dated.
For the same amount of money of a new Porsche Cayenne S you could buy a slightly used legend, a 911.
911s never die.

Check out Acura ZDX, great 4X4, fast, comfy, ultra rare (only seen one in the year I have owned mine) love it, but the styling is over the top and not for everyone.

Why? Get a tuareg or audi q5. Nearly the same car for a lot less money.
Personally, I find them rather impracticable given how little space there is a for a such a large SUV. The X5 is much better vehicle when it comes to interior space.

I thought about the Touareg, but I've heard the Porsche's suspension tuning is a lot better, and since I'm in the snow belt, the fact that the Cayenne offers a limited slip rear end, is a definite plus.
I understand, but I've heard the Bimmers aren't as reliable as the Porsches.

I'd venture a guess that X5 would be more economical to own than Cayenne. Neither will be all that reliable, but I think BMW service network is better organized and easier to use. Another thing to consider is that BMW underwrites extended warranties for their cars. You cannot purchase factory authorized extended warranty for Porsche and aftermarket warranties are quite a bit more expensive. The audi and vw versions of cayenne are going to be cheaper to buy and to own, as well and both VW and Audi sell extended warranties.

The X5 will be in the shop more than a Cayenne. My sister in law has a Cayenne S with 130K miles and it has been basic maintenance except a starter replacement. They are great SUVs and very competant off road. Check out some of the youtube videos of them off roading.

I have owned three Cayenne Turbos and three Denalis. Although the Denali is a great SUV I highly prefer the Cayenne for comfort and fun factor. As far as the comments about reliability or maintenance, it is obvious they have never owned a Cayenne, I have spent no more than 1.5k over three vehicles, 200K miles, and 5 years.

I was doing a little more reading over the weekend, and it appears that Porsche is dropping the NA 8 cylinder, and replacing it with a twin turbo 6, for the model year 2015....

I have an Audi Q7 with the 3.0 TDI. Not a race car, but tons of torque and very nice to drive. A bit small in the trunk, but I am very happy so far.
I watch the Audi forum's. Only posts are about big repairs. Not sure of frequency of occurrence, but many are costly.
