Odometer Fraud
Has any one bought a car thinking it had the advertised miles & found out latter the vehicle had many more miles than advertised?
How did you resolve the problem?

Back in the 1980s I purchased a low mileage car only to find a recent oil change sticker on the door jam with three times the mileage that was showing on the odometer. The previous owner would not return my phone calls, was not an expensive car, I just decided the hell with it and drove it.

pretty sure tampering with an odometer is a federal crime these days...
also have heard that if you dig deep enough into a cars computer you can find out the true mileage even though the odometer reads a different number.

Roscoe,
Private sale or dealer? If private sale and your seller didn't buy new, they could have been "shnookered" also; or, they can claim they were.
You have a better case against a dealer. Obviously, you will need to present your evidence. This happened to me and the authorities (FBI & Maryland MVA) were quite interested. They helped me resolve a case involving a Chrysler minivan I bought used from a dealer in the 90's. It turned out to be one of many vehicles involved in a rollback scheme they were investigating.
In Maryland dealers are required to be bonded, and my claim was paid after 11 months.
I wish you the best,
Rickman

the car fax showed on 11/06/2010/ mileage 175,059
04/26/2013 mileage 76,476
It looks like the rolled back 100,000 miles
I bought the vehicle off a private party

You are stuck doing small claims court, unless the local PD or prosecuters office want to take it up, which I doubt.

I think my c5 had more mileage then it said on the odometer. I don't remember when I found out but it was through carmax where it had a red flag. It was a high mileage car already at just over 100k and think it was around 25k rolled back. I got such a great deal on the vette that I didn't bother with it because I feared it would be a lot of hassle for a car I got much cheaper then if it did have the added miles.the tranny did eventually need to be rebuilt but that was more of me being dumb with it. Nothing else major ever happened for the 55k miles I had her.
