Due to its small size, rear drive and V8 option, I'm thinking it was the last car to replicate something like a flathead powered T bucket or '32 Highboy. Gremlin had a stronger body than Vega or Pinto. Better build up potential as a small hi performance car, and quite good looking before the 1973/74 impact bumpers came.

While most AMC vehicles came off as quirky, I always felt the the exception was the Javelin, especially the first gen. One things for certain, blind spot prominence was trivialized, back then. The Gremlin's was a wopper.

Back when they were around I had the 6 but really wanted the 8 cyl. Got the 8 and thought I was so tough. The other small cars didn't have 8 cyl. AMC tried so hard to get into the big 3's territory. They came out with some radical designs i.e. javelin, eagle 4wd car, pacer, matador. Gezz, they were not the same old same old when it came to design.

I had a Gremlin X in high school. 304 V8 in a very light, short wheelbase car. What could possibly go wrong?
It was one of the funnest cars I've owned.

God bless AMC, they didn't follow the crowd, my God they did not!
I like a patriotic gal!
