Default New M5 plays fake engine noise through speakers

Ooooooh, yeahhhhh, this is a deal breaker in my book. Automobile magazine just wrote a pretty good bashing of the new M5. Apparently the little TT V8 sounds so bad, BMW had to record and enhance an engine soundtrack and play it through the speakers. Automobile mag. removed the fuse and apparently it sounded like dog poop through a wet vac. Seriously, on a $90K car?

Also said that the X5M and X6M hold boost much better, sadly because they have traditional slushboxes. Dual clutch trans. in the M5 can't handle it so you loose boost on upshifts. I think the BMW M division has officially lost it. Only cars I will EVER consider from them here on out are the current M3 or previous V10 M5.

It's true! I have the Mag. ----------ain't that some silly $hit!!!!!!

I had a friend in High school (1977 &78) who had a '66 that was sloooooow. So to sound more intimidating he recorded my 69 camaro ( fast& loud ) revving. He would crank it on his stereo very loud at stop lights -----it was good for a few laughs!!!

I think he is an engineer for BMW now.

This is up there with the "interfooler" that the boy racers used to put on imports with 80 hp.

The M5 is still able to hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds according to car and driver..

they can play whatever they want in the stereo speakers they want...as long as the car rips off 60mph times like that..

My 08 vette only does it in 4 flat with the manual if I hit it just right..

Mercedes C63 with its MCT transmission and 480hp runs to 60 mph in 3.7 too..

That C7 better be all that and more..

I'm a vette enthusiast but I definitely can admire the competiton...

I lose all admiration for companies that take shortcuts. Most performance cars have some amount of time devoted to exhaust tuning, to ensure the car sounds like it "should" (according to the development team). Apparently, BMWs engineers know how the car "should" sound, but instead of real engineering, they've taken a major shortcut. That ruins it in my book. It would have been better just to leave it off, and tune the output to be nice and quiet.

It's kind of like stuffing a sock... Well, you get the idea.

I have a c63 AMG and believe me it doesn't need a fake sound track!!
The stock exhaust sound fantastic with lots of burble on down shifts.
I don't get what BMW was thinking on this one.

I'm really bummed as I had high hopes for this car.

The engine itself is probably pretty loud. The problem is that BMW has used so many sound-deadening technologies to make the vehicle quieter, they have cancelled out the exhaust noise.

It's a shame really. If this technology was used on the standard 5 series models, it would not be a problem. But a person walking into a BMW dealership who looks at an M5 is probably much more interested in the performance feel of the vehicle than the road noise it produces.

Definitely true. Lots of articles on it (one below). Automobile review still isn't up, they were the first to pull the fuse and see how it really sounds vs. the fake sound.

My stock CTS-V may only go 0-60 in 3.9 seconds but I don't need a soundtrack from GT5 () to make it sound like a real car!!!

I think you V guys came up with the next commercial for your car. They should lead in by making you think it is for the new M5. "The 2012 BMW M5 comes equipped with a 4.4 liter twin turbocharged V8 and an active sound design system that plays synthetic engine noise inside the cabin. Our response?" [V doing massive burnout, camera outside the car then inside the car, roaring, then shooting off into the distance sounding like a beast] "The 2012 Cadillac CTS-V."

Meh, most BMW purists hate those two model M's as well.

The E92 M3 doesn't sound all that spectacular either.

E60 M5 I can understand since most came with SMG and it's a porker. I could live with this though: [check out 1 min. 28 seconds]
