if you ever get over there, also check out the Bugatti Museum in Mulhouse, France.
Luckily, its just a few miles over the border from Freiburg, Germany(not far from Stuttgart) and has over 400 classic cars (mostly Bugattis), also very nice.
Unfortunately my camera battery was dead when we were there.

We were guest of a friend who has an independent Porsche race shop about 1/2 hour from the ring. It was pretty cool, he gave us crew pit passes so we could get into the thick of things. His shop had 4 cars in the races earlier that week.
About 200 cars started in the 24 hr race. they started them in 3 groups at 2 or 3 minute intervals. The pits are really a crazy place for the 24 hr race because about 8 cars shared each bay on the pit lane.
One thing I really enjoyed was watching the Porsche GT3 Cup race Sat morning before the 24 hrs. We got a spot on one of the turns nearby the small village of Nurburg where they came down a hill into a 90 degree turn and then back up another hill. Watching well over 100 Cup cars make their laps in the light rain was very entertaining.
The only bad part about spectating there is that it takes about 10 minutes for the cars to make a lap, but with the number of cars that were running, there was always some action.
When they aren't racing or the track isn't rented, you can pay a few Euro and make a "tourist" lap. They have a 100 kmph speed limit that is totally ignored.
If you go, bring a good jacket, it can get rainy, windy and cool there even in summer. Or it can be in the 90s and sunshine.
