Just test drove a 2007 gt500 and I was a little dissapointed. From my research it looks like the mustang runs about equal to the c5 z06 but it sure doesnt feel it. I did had two people with me during the test drive so that probably didnt help matters! They were asking 37k for the car and it has less a 1000 miles on the clock. I love the looks of the car from the front, it looks tough as hell. It needs to be dropped at least and inch to get rid of the unsightly wheel gaps. When you nailed it the back of the car dropped like the new gtos do which sucks. The rear of the car is no where near as sweet as the Z06. Maybe some wider meats in the back would help it look better from behind. The interior was better than I expected it had nav and a decent factory stereo. The seats were better quality than the vette. I could live without the stripe package even though the black with the grey stripes looks good (this one was red with white stripes)..While driving the car on the highway at 70 in 6th gear the car had no pull whatsover, I imagine a nice set of 4:10 gears would change that. I understand that you can add a pulley, intake and tune and you pick up close to 65 horsepower which would really wake the car up I bet.
A big gripe about those cars is the weight. I know they are heavier than the 03/04 Cobras. I remember with the 03/04s came out everyone was getting those. I hardly saw people getting the GT500s till recently. Not sure of the reason why though.
Those cars are heavy, but are animals. Just exhaust, pulley, tune, gears, and you have a quick car. Not in the same league overall as the Z, but not a slouch either. My buddies car runs 10's on 305/35/18 drag radials.
Well, I guess you're entitled to your opinion, but I'd love to have a GT
500 Mustang. I certainly wouldn't trade my Z for one, but if I could have another toy, for the money, that 'Stang would do just fine. To the OP, I don't know why you would expect it to pull strong from 70 in sixth gear. That's kinda why you have 6 different gears to choose from. Why do some people still trash Fords, or Chryslers, for that matter? Cool cars can be any brand.
I really didnt expect it to pull hard at 70 mph in 6th I was just stating that it had no pull as in it would barely accelerate unlike the z which still accelerates at 70 in 6th probably due to the m12 tranny. I have owned a couple of stangs before and I still that my 93 gt was one of my favorites at least as far as sound and fun to drive goes. I would without a doubt add a gt500 as a stable mate to my z06, if I had the money of course, it would just need a few mandatory mods
my friend has this car and did a lot of upgrades: he has ported supercharger, throttle body, exhaust, heat exchange, 3.73, mickey thompson, roll bar, tune
he has 500 rwhp and has ran 11.3
Anyway his car is fast but he spent a lot in mods and on the car
he has gotten a 100 shot but hasn't used it yet
think that it weighs 3800lbs

Reason: adding more
The reason why nobody was buying them off the start is because they were charging $100k+ up here in Canada when they first came out!! Can we say markup?? lol

Its definitely not the trans ratio's (though that may help some) my GTO had the same trans as the C5Z and it didnt have the same get up and go the vette does in any gear. I had alot done to my gto including 3.91 gears, full exhaust, cam, ported throttle body, ported fast 90 and it still didnt pull like my stock z does in 6th. Weight is the biggest factor. My GTO was definitely faster than the z but it didnt FEEL faster, i can imagine a stock GT500 with a couple people in the car would leave you feeling unimpressed.
I really like them. Would love white w/ silver stripes. With that said anything other than straight line fun they are huge underdogs stock for stock. Just look at the SCCA Solo classing. Also if you plan to take it out on a road course for more than a few spirited laps you're going to need to upgrade the brakes.
They don't do much of anything for me. The looks, the weight, the handling, the price...no thanks.
On the other hand an 03/04 cobra would work for me. They went the wrong way with the cobra...
Eh, I sold my '03 Cobra to buy my Z06. The Cobra had some work done and made around 500 rwhp, but it was really only good for turning tires to smoke. It didn't hook well enough on the street to have fun, and it handled like a Mustang. It was rattly and squeaky, the seats were uncomfortable after about 30 minutes, and after 4 years I just got tired of that stuff. The Z06 is perfect for me...just an all-around better driving experience, even with a 150 rwhp deficit.
Its amazing what a Corvette ZO6 with less weight and less hp can do. I agree that if the GT500 floats your boat, have at it. A co-worker of mine has one with the pulley upgrade, gear swap, and tuning. He let me drive it and its fast, but doesnt seem aaggreesive in all gears like the Z. Personall if I had the money I would have a Camaro SS in my garage. It has a fresher look than the GT500, modding it will be cheaper than the Mustang, and the resale value will always be better.
I would roll in a GT500 any day. I love the cars for what they are. I wish they would go on a diet though. Personally with the right wheels and stance, I think they look as good as a C5Z if not better.
The GT500s do nothing for me...too heavy, ugly retro looks and expensive. Some folks love 'em, though, and that's cool by me.
Honestly? If I wanted a big, heavy, plush car that was fast in a straight-line, I would just buy another Grand National. The 2003-04 Cobras are IMO a better car for less than half the price right now. Then again, you are getting an opinion from a guy that is looking to buy another Fox-body GT, so take it with a grain of salt...
I drove a 2007 GT500 a few years ago and it did nothing for me. Now when the new 2010 came out I went down to have a look at a normal 315hp GT just to see if it looked any better/worse. The guy talked me into a test drive and it was MUCH better than the old 2007. It was not as fast but the car drove 100% better than the old one. Looked about the same though, and was ok by me for it since the looks have always been a strong point IMO. If it was my money it would be on the new 2010 model.
