Teat drove one today with the DSG auto. I hafta say that the darn thing did scoot for only bein' a 200hp turbo. Sticker was $30k, little steep but it sure was a nice little car. Anyone have experience with them?
I bought a 4 dour 2009 GTI with DSG in April. It was loaded stickered out at 28 something I paid 26K....so far it's a great daily driver. I was at the stealership this Wednesday to get the oil changed...part of the "free" maintenance with the car. I took a look at the new ones and was shocked that the '10 with the same options now stickers at 30,600. It's basically the same car, same exact engine and tranny with some new sheet metal and some minor changes inside. I much prefer the styling of my gen V but the gauges and stock radio on the new gen VI are much cleaner and readable. The GTI does everything well, is plenty fast, has a great interior and I love the fact that it has HID headlights. I wish the corvette came with as nice a steering wheel as the GTI...had to shell out and buy a DSvettes one...couldn't stand the mushy generic wheel in every GM fincluding the Cobalt that comes stock. Also if you flash them you can get them to really scream...or so I've been told...easily 250hp and gobs of torque without really pushing the engine too hard. Mine's a daily driver mainly for the wife and I have a 06' Corvette so the GTI stays stock. The stock dynaudio stereo is decent if not great. Put a Yakima rack on it and you can haul bikes, boards, skiis, kayaks, etc etc.
While there I also test drove a 2010 Subaru WRX hatchback....very smooth engine and I liked the suspension setup (esp. compared to the 04' WRX I used to own), better clutch uptake than my 04' as well, good clean gauges, decent seats, but the interior door panels and console panels were the cheapest hard plastic I've ever seen...also the shifter was vague and sloppy. The first thing I would do is add a kartboy shifter and bushings set....also the radio/stereo was ubercheap...but it was the base model not the "premium" where you add 2500 to the price for a sunroof, forglights, improved stereo and heated seats and mirrors. It's a basic double din so putting in an aftermarket system would be a breeze. Aside from the sloppy shifter I really liked it, even with the hecka cheap plastics....oh the paint job was miles ahead of my 04' as well. You might want to check them out as well....the sedans are hideous looking but this hatchback I drove in white pearl looked really sharp. I think it stickered at 25.7 or thereabouts...and I think they have more room to discount than most VW/Audi products...or so my salesman (same guy that sold me the GTI) told me.
If I had to buy a practical hatchback that was moderately high performance those are my two picks for sure. Honestly my old 04' WRX sedan was more fun to drive than my current corvette. The 2010 WRX hatchback base model would be very high on my list of cars to buy if I were looking. Pick one up for around 24K and fix the shifter for around 170 bucks, and throw in a good aftermarket stereo and you've got a great versatile car with a stereo just the way you like it for around 26K, plus various forms of govt. @ss rapery/taxes. Throw in some snow tires on a spare set of wheels and you will literally beg for blizzards to come your way. Subarus are very rack friendly as well, lots of options out there but I think Yakima makes better gear than the other big competitor, Thule.
If you do get one there are good forums for both.... http://forums.nasioc.com and www.vwvortex.com come to mind. I picked up a spare set of new OEM wheels to mount snow tires for dirt cheap from one of the VW vendors.

Thanks for the input. I still wanna drive one with the 6 speed manual as opposed to the DSG. Also the $30k sticker was a little but the salesman did say that there was wiggle room. We'll see.
Yeah I about choked when I saw the 30,600 for a loaded 4 door. The optioning is a bit different with the new models....for one the Xenon headlights are not standard and the Autobahn package includes the sunroof, whereas in the 2009 model the sunroof came with an 18" wheel package and the Autobahn package was mainly the heated leather seats, and additional safety features. If I were to buy a 2010 and wanted to keep the price under control, I would do a special order and wait. I'd skip the Autobahn package, add the Bi-Xenon headlamps, the optional Dynaudio sound system (unless you were looking at putting in a custom stereo), and the transmission of your choice. I would definately skip the 18" Detroit wheels with 40 series tires, previously called hufeisen (horseshoe wheels) wheels....I just changed them out for the winter 17" wheels and tires and they weigh a ton....they are definately more for looks with the German ricers rather than performance...the 225/45R17 Denver wheel/tire setup makes alot more sense for performance...lighter, less prone to pothole blowouts.

Hmm, funny you say that about the 18" wheels, I sorta liked them on the car. No customization for me I'd stay stock, although I would put on a CAI but that's it.
Oh don't get me wrong they look pretty decent, it's just they raise the sticker price and don't really add anything to the performance of the car....actually quite the opposite. Have you seen the 18" black Khartoums? Those would look great on a white or red GTI. The trick is to finding on of the forum dealers blowing them out for cheap.
