Default To Buy or Not To Buy...

One of my good friends is moving to Hawaii and he can't take his mustang with him. Its a black 1990 Mustang GT with power convt. top. He bought a brand new 5.0L 302 crate motor and had it stroked to a 5.4L 331. The motor and 5-speed tranny have about 250 miles on it. The motor was done up right and is built by a very good and known mustang tuner here in MI and installed by my friend, his father, and I. After a dyno tune we estimate 475whp and 500 ft. lbs of torque. Has the 5 lug conversion with 03 cobra rims. 03 cobra interior. Full exhaust from headers back. His father bought it new in 91 so I know the history of the car and helped work on it with him, no accidents or any damage. Paint is a 8 out of 10, interior is a 9 out of 10. Pretty much everything is new except the paint and has over $18,000 in receipts. He has it listed for $8,000 but said he would let it go to me for $6,500. I've always wanted one of these early 90's mustangs but wanted a corvette more. Now I have a chance to purchase a very powerful one that I know the complete history of. So what do you guys think.. should I purchase or pass?

thats alot of car for very lil money, i say go for it. A vette shouldent really play into this equation becasue of the money factor..

yea its a lot of car for the money for sure. I think we are over estimating the hp and torque numbers a little but nontheless a powerful car. I already bought the vette a few years ago and now i have a chance for a powerful early 90's mustang. I think I'll jump on it.

Sounds like a sweet deal...
I would be all over that car!

HP numbers seem very high with no power adders
Especially if thats to the rear wheels?...
My FRPP 347ci z headed crate engine is rated at 450hp fwhp.
On the dyno it put down 382RWHP which I was very pleased with as this equates to just over 15% parasitic loss.

yea, i think we over estimated the numbers. I think it will make 375-425rwhp based on other people's 331's that we collaborated with to build this 331 and other engine factors. Based on the average 15% loss from crank to wheels, crank hp is estimated at 440-500. Will know for sure if I buy it and then dyno it

If you don't want that for $6500, I do. Shoot me a PM with your buddy's contact info if you pass on it.

Heck, I had a '90 Mustang GT stock with the exception of offroad exhaust and had an absolute blast in it. I would buy it in a heart beat!

That is my intent but it would be nice if it increased a little in value as I enjoy it.

It's worth more than $6500 right now. Buy it already.

Buy it on the condition you can sell it if you decide you really wanted the Vette.

i'd buy it. those things are getting hard to find with clean straight bodies. I couldnt see the pics, but it seems good to me. You can make those really fast with not too much cash (compared to vettes of course)
