Default Dual mode exhaust......whats the history?

All,

Visited the Lambo factory last week and noticed this on a Diablo in the museum so I assume this is a factory exhaust but I could be wrong. This got me to wondering if dual modes (not including plain ole cutouts) have been in use on other vehicles over the years. Anyhow, figured I'd share the pic.

Not sure on the history but alot of manufacturers are going that route, 911 turbo has it, 135 as mentioned and the 335 (notice on the 335 one side's tip is always black, the other is not so much), new m3, aston martin v8 vantage...probably quite a few more. Definitely a fan of it though, best of both worlds. Doesn't surprise me though to see a diablo sporting that setup stock...matter of time and now it's with us on non-exotic cars.

Yes, my 2002 Infiniti I35 has the dual-mode exhaust so it certaintly pre-dates the NPP exhaust that showed up in the '08 Corvettes. However, my '08 sounds much better than the I35 when those valves open.

1991 3000gt VR4 had active exhaust, they dropped it in 97 due to cost. They came with a "mild to wild" switch built right in.

They also had 4 wheel steering and active aero.

Did you get to see the factory too? I went back in 2005. Best trip ever.
