Default Flatfender Jeep and Cummins A series diesel

For quite some time now I have been wanting a 40mpg do everything
vehicle that's not a front wheel drive dweeb machine..

Flatfender Willys Jeeps ..early vintage.. are a very lightweight vehicle..
about 2200lbs... (remember, they stuffed them in gliders during WWII)
and are just about all I would be wanting for such a project

My original thought was to put a 1.9 turbo VW diesel in one... but
a few weeks ago I found out about the Cummins "A Series" engines
.. these are mostly generator destined motors but are suitable for
automotive use... the largest displacement of the A Series is
2200 to 2300 cc's... considering this is ruffly the same size of engine
I had in my 240D Mercedes which weighed around 4000 lbs I believe
the power will be adequate....(not going to be drag'n a diesel jeep)

Anyway... just wanted to throw this idea out there and field opinions
.... acceleration is not really an issue in this instance.. i really just
don't care... Im more interested in going 100 miles on 2.5 gallons
and regaining my "active wonderer" status on our nations highways.

Sounds like a neat project. I think your life would be simpler if you found a complete drivetrain from another car rather than going to the trouble to adapt a special engine to your Jeep. Also, the whole premise strikes me as strange because this will cost you more to get the worse economy than you could get with a normal car (and it would be more work). Why don't you just buy a normal Jeep and a normal economy car? That way, you could have the go anywhere capability when you want it and cheap, efficient, reliable transportation when you don't. Lastly, an old Jeep like you are talking about will handle horribly and generally be far less safe than a modern car.

Still, if you do it, post pictures.

Over the years i've had 2 flatfendered Jeeps a 46 and a 47--you will not like the ride they provide--suggest you use the body and another suspencion. They also leaked water under and around the windshield too--Just my thoughts--
