Default What's the difference between the 2009 CTS-V engine and the ZR-1 engine?

Does the CTS-V have carbon fiber or balsa wood in it to help save weight? Just how safe is a car that is made out of carbon fiber and balsa wood

Depends on where the balsa wood is. If I recall the floorboards in the C5's were made from balsa wood. It is a very strong wood for it's weight.

Is the Balsa wood used for noise insulation?
Otherwise the two engines are the same?

I don't think the Caddy has the ZR1's titanium valve train and the Caddy weighs about 4300 lbs

Titanium internals for the LS9 and more boost. And a LOT more cost.

If you ask me, the CTS-V is one of the best automotive bargains around for a fun vehicle, a virtual ZR-1 engine in a $65,000 luxury car!

The CTS-V has a smaller supercharger, is what I've been told. Cuts the HP to about 460-something, iirc.

Edit: And the balsa wood in the 'vette is actually sandwiched between layers of fiberglass.

Carbon Fiber can be made for safety. However the Carbon fiber used in the Vette is only for body panels which are not used as structure or crash protection. So whether the panels are carbon fiber or plastic like a standard Vette it doesn't make a difference.

Balsa wood is used as a filler for noise and also for separation between two layers of material to give added stiffness, like if you have ever seen a Honeycomb core in composites it acts the same way but also has the added advantage of being a good noise insulator.
