Default Better mpg: diesel 2010 Chevy Silverado 1500

July 9, 2008

All-new turbodiesel with 72 less parts than regular turbodiesel engine.

Under its hood is GM’s revolutionary new dual-overhead cam 4.5-liter Duramax V8. The 4-valve engine was designed with 6 dozen fewer parts than a conventional diesel. Separate intake and exhaust manifolds have been eliminated and integrated directly into the engine. Airflow is reversed, so fresh air enters through the outer portion of the cylinder heads and exhaust gases are dumped inboard into a variable vane turbocharger and EGR cooler that sits in the valley of the 72-degree V8. Removing hardware and rearranging key components reduces the 4.5-L Duramax’s footprint compared to conventional V8 diesels with similar displacements, so the 4.5-L Duramax can fit in the same space as GM’s 6.2-L small-block gas V8.

GM officially says it expects the 4.5-L Duramax to deliver class-leading horsepower and torque, with ratings in excess of 310 horsepower and 520 pounds-feet of torque. It will also meet stringent 2010 light-duty emissions in all 50 states, using a diesel particulate filter to remove soot and urea selective catalytic reduction to scrub nitrogen oxide.

Even though it shares the Duramax name with the heavy-duty 6.6-liter V8 — which has been engineered and produced in partnership with Isuzu Motors — the new diesel is 100% designed by GM and will be built without Isuzu’s involvement.

With a six speed auto, Chevy is saying close to 30 MPG highway.

in a lighter truck, I would say thats a reasonable number.

I was reading some duramax conversions into cars were getting around that or more.

should make for a great muscle truck as well as a good light duty tow rig.

The hummer community has been anxiously awaiting this powerplant as it was supposed to make its way into the 2010 H2, there are rumors now that it wont I would definately be looking hard at that vehicle should it hit the showroom. I heard high teens around town and over 20mpgs on the highway should it be placed in the H2, currently get 11-12 around town and 13-14 highway so I would say paying 20% more for fuel and getting approximately 70% better mileage would be beneficial not to mention the increase in power/torque.

I say bring it GM....... I think clean diesel is a good avenue vs. this electric car crap since down the road we are gonna have to recycle/dispose of these batteries not to mention the process to produce them is extremely polluting. The damn Prius is far more polluting from raw material manufacture to production to 10 years of road use to disposal than any large V8 truck on the market.
