Well I've got over a quarter million miles on the K2500, and I went shopping last week. Does anyone have any experiance with these Toyota Tacomas? I am looking for some fuel economy in my next truck, and the Tacoma kind of caught my eye. Are there any other trucks that I should be checking out?
I have a friend who bought a new Tundra about 3 weeks ago. It is a nice truck, he is only seeing around 14mpg at this point, although he only has a couple thousand miles on it. I would also look at the Tundra.
I have another friend who has a Tundra and my neighbor is a GM for a Toyota dealership. He has brought a couple of them home that had the magnaflow exhaust installed, sounds great. they are nice trucks, very smooth, quiet and have great power.
I had a 2005 Tacoma. It was a great truck. Gas mileage ran about 17-18. It didn't matter if it was around town or highway the mileage was consistent. It was a V6 4x4 manual trans.
I now have a 2007 Silverado which I'm very happy with. It has the 5.3 V8 with active fuel management. Mileage is very comparable to the Tacoma, but with a much bigger truck with V8 power. On the highway I've gotten 20.2. My only complaint is that it's automatic only. The transmission works fine, but I prefer manual.
If you want the best of both worlds then the only way to go is Diesel, go for a New 2500 with the Duramax/Allison combo. You will never get the power and mileage with a gas engine that you will get with diesel. Granted the fuel is about 15-20% more expensive than regular gas but when you compare that the mileage is 40-50% better with a diesel it makes sence.
A 2500 Silverado with a 6.0L will get about 12mpg with mixed driving..... you can easily get 17-18mpg with the Duramax

Friends don't let friends buy Japanese trucks. I have a Ford F-150 Supercrew (4 full sized doors - can comfortably carry six to the game with grill and other tailgate stuff in the back) and love it. An Acura crashed into the back of my truck, thousands of dollars damage to the car, I just wiped the paint off of my rear bumper, good as new, didn't even scratch the chrome. One of my buds at work has a Toyota truck, someone backed into it in the parking lot, creased his chrome bumper. Ford tough is not is a jingle, it is why they are still the top selling truck in the USA!
I think the new Silverado/Sierras get the best MPG of any of the new full size trucks. And from everyone I know that has had the smaller pickups, they don't get much if any better despite the size difference.
Ford F150 vs Chevy Silverado 1500 vs Toyota Tundra..
I would personally stay away from the Tundra. It is having a ton of quality problems. I live in the same city as the plant and know a few who work there.
The Tundra now has the following issues that I am aware of:
1) Tailgate collapse due to poor welding
2) Engine camshaft sensor problem
3) Driveshaft can come apart
4) Transmission failures
I would recommend a Titan which has been pretty much bulletproof after Nissan fixed the problems with the rear diff and brakes. The only thing is, there is talks about it being discontinued. Nissan is joinging forces with Chrysler/Dodge.
Anyone who says the Nissan Titan is a japan truck is very wrong. It is actually more American than any truck made currently. Engine is made here in the USA, so is the truck. Ford, Chevy don't even build their trucks here. I forget which one, but one builds them in Canada, and the other somewhere else.

That "somewhere else" for the F150's would be Dearborn, Michigan, Previously they were built in Norfolk, Virginia. I didn't major in geography, but ...

Most chevys and fords are actually built here. Ford has a plant or two in mexico and chevy has a couple in canada but the majority of F150s and silverados are built right here.
This list will show you whhere every car is built and what percentage of american parts are used.
I have recently driven just about every truck on the market. I replace them every two years simply because I like to drive new. I currently yown a Nissan Titan crew cab and the truck before this was a Nissan Titan king cab. Mind you, I am not partial to any brand. I pick the one that's the best by my standards.
Normally, I wouldn't even consider a truck outside of the big three but after so many trips to the dealership with my Silverados, the absolute horrible service departments of the GM vehicles, and the rising cost of vehicles, I was pretty much forced to look outside of the big 3.
When I looked to replace the current Titan that I have, I went out and drove all of trucks that were on the market with the exception of the desiel models.
I am sticking with my current Titan. Nothing on the market can beat it.
I am to admit I don't care for Fords or Dodge and the decision against them was simply because they just don't float my boat. Driving a Ford makes me feel like I am sleeping with the enemy and a Dodge will always just be a Dodge. More importantly, I just don't feel like their service departments would satisfy me. I'd take the Ford over the Dodge if I was forced.
The Silverados were, unfortunately, the least impressive truck that I drove. The truck felt like it weighed 10000 lbs. Way underpowered.
The new Tundra was a very nice truck. The deal breaker is that it failed to impress me over my Titan. It ran and drove fantastic. Very nice truck. However, so does my Titan and my Titan with 380 ft/lb of torque FEELS more powerful.
Whoever designed the drivetrain with the Titan gets an award. Of ALL of the 58 vehicles that I have ever owned, the Titan has the absolute best combination of cam, transmission, and rear end of them all. I am a fast paced person and I expect that when I put my foot in it, my vehicles better be able to keep up with me. It never fails me.
Only trips to the dealer are for scheduled maintenance.
The Tacoma truck is an excellent truck and may be my choice if I was looking for a slow small truck without a lot of room inside it. Going from a 2500 series truck to this would be a shocker. Some of the people that I know that own them abuse them more than any vehicle deserves to be beat but they keep on going. Very well designed.
There was one other vehicle that I drove and would have actually done the deal on if the trade value on my Titan wasn't beat up so bad. That's the GMC Sierra Denali. THAT was an awesome truck! Plenty of power, lots of ammenities. Basically has everything that my Titan has. the one down side though was full time AWD. Not really my favorite.
My titan is fully loaded. And I mean FULLY loaded. You can't get any more options. It stickered at $45K. Trade value just a year and a half later was $23k. Just not willing to take that beating.
