Check out this video of the GT2 - claims the car goes around the nordschleife in 7:32 - thats pretty impressive. If I remember correctly, the Z06 does it in 7:40, right?
With the Z's balance and huge power & brakes, why the almost 8 second difference? Is it the suspension?
"PS - the driver was Walter Rohrl - who is the factory hot shoe. "
Pio I think you just answered your own question. My personal favorite driver around rhe Ring is Hans Stuck, but Rohrl is in fact (probably) the fastest driver around this track where experience is "EVERYTHING"

Talk about having the best job in the world, huh...
Not to imply that the Z would've beat that time, but the Z was run with runflats IIRC. Also times from different days with different conditions are not really comparable. Nothing we can do about the different drivers, so that variable is always gonna be there.
Does the GT2 wear R compounds? That is going to be good for a few seconds right there, add a little more power and an incredible driver like Rohrl and there you have it.
I was in a HPDE with a red GT2. His lap times were .5 second faster than mine on a track that is 90% twisties. He was all over me in the slow corners...fussing me hard, so I politely waved and floored it at the exit. When I reached the next turn he was 4 car lengths behind me...LOL That was when I was running those crappy GY runflats. I bet now with Invos I'd smoke him good. I had a passenger, he didn't.
Old subject but even Sport Auto got a 7:33 time with the 997 GT2. Very unlikely IMHO the Z06 could better it in any test, same mag/driver got 7:49 or something for the Z06. 16 seconds is an eternity for a timed event.
What sport auto said about it "best result ever, the most powerful and best handling 911 ever opens a new chapter in history, best result ever in sport auto supertest, taking the lead on front of the CGT and GT3 RS (both 77 pts.), the LP650 (76), the Zonda F (75) and the CCR (74). a perfect 10, a prefect super sportscar for the dialy driver, very reliable, easy to to control, offering a lot of fun"
16.3 seconds 0-200kph-0.
3175lbs, 530HP, 505ft lbs of TQ 2200-4500 RPM and top speed of 204mph. Let the magazine racers go wild!
For anyone who thinks Nordschleife lap times are of particular significance, consider that two identical Porsche 956's racing in the 1000km of Nurburgring in 1983 placed 1st and 2nd in qualifying, on the same day, but their times were separated by 6 seconds.
6:11.13
6:16.85
I think that says it all about the variability of different drivers on this track, and the track conditions themselves.
Of all the tracks in the world to compare cars on, this has to be the worst from a scientific perspective. It is huge, it is not well known by most drivers, it has immense variability due to weather, and over the course of time its configuration and rules have changed greatly.
I think looking at a much larger collection of less variable lap times for production cars (such as reported by fastestlaps.com) is a far better method of comparison.

MPSC's (in 325/30-19), checked that out at the LA Auto show.

The tires make a huge difference.
But the GT2 also has more power and torque, so there in no wonder can go faster on Nurburgring with one of the best 'Ring specialists/pro drivers, WR.
Somebody must do a run with a stock C6 Z06, with the same tires (MPSC) and with a 'Ring specialist at the wheel. That would show the real deal about Z06 on 'Ring.
Just equal the tires on the Z06 and they are nearly even. The tires are worth about 8 seconds on that course. A better comparison will be the upcoming ZR1 to the GT2. And it's still half the price.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions like that. If you assume same drivers, that's still 7:41 vs 7:33.
Looking at the trap speeds, the GT2 is going about 15 mph faster on the main straight (Döttiger Höhe) than the Z06 (167 vs 182 mph) despite entering the straight at the same speed of 140 km/h (87 mph).
GM built the car for the real world. Run flats are a good idea for daily driving. Tires wear out, you want non runflats, get em, but you take your chances.......for me I want that run flat capability...........

That's a metric sh*t ton.
Where is this shown? (URL)
I find that hard to believe given the "official" power ratings. 25 HP doesn't get you that kind of speed advantage at the end of a straight when corner exit speeds are the same. One of those variables is wrong.
