and with a couple of bolt ons made
575 rw hp..

It's been a good day today with the 2008. We have been able to try a variety of exhaust combinations, and have the following results to report:

2008 Viper Baseline = 546 rw hp / 515 rw tq

3 inch Stainless Catback Exhaust System = 561 rw hp
(15 rw hp gain over stock)

3 inch Stainless Full Manifold-back Exhaust System with High Flow Cats = 569 rw hp
(23 rw hp gain over stock)

3 inch Stainless Full Manifold-back Exhaust System with No Cats = 575 rw hp / 546 rw tq
(29 rw hp / 30 rw tq gain over stock)

The power gains are pretty even from 3000 to 6000 rpm on all of the above mods.

The factory airbox seems to flow very well and before we tried the exhaust mods we found that there was no power gain by removing the factory air filter and the lower half of the factory airbox. I dont think SRT left any power on the air induction side.

We are headed to the track tomorrow. Pics and videos are coming at some point when I get some time.

That definately sounds strong! Stock HP is the most I have ever heard on a stock car, more than my GT! It ought to run really good, I am sure you will put up some strong numbers at the track.
Good luck!

Those are very stout numbers for bone stock.

Sounds really strong. Let's see what they do with some mods... and more importantly lets see what they do on the track. How much room is there for improvement? The LS7 has already produced well over 600RWHP in N/A form, will this 8.3 monster do more?

I'd say it'll be easier to get 700+ hp N/A out of the new Viper motor than falling out of a boat and hitting water.

Oh man, no, not another dyno war... you show just a 10% drive train loss,
Come on now. 16% - 18% is more like it.

Yup, 620hp seems to be the true "out of the box" numbers..

Ok fine 540rwhp. Close to 350 more lbs doesn't help.

The 08 Viper has a curb weight of 3450 and rwhp of 540 and rwtq of 515.

3450/540 6.4 LBS/RWHP

3450/515 6.7 LBS/RWTQ

So the curb weight of the Z is 3132

Which means you only need 490RWHP and 470rwtq for the same hp/wt ratio.

For $2300 you can be well over 500rwhp and 500rwtq with the LG Headers and a small cam.
Not only that but it will handle and brake better since you are carrying less lateral weight.
The headers are easy to install yourself and the cam is probably $400 from a reputable shop. Horsepower alone doesn't tell the whole story.

Good luck getting the viper down to 3100lbs

This slightly used Z is 64k add 2.5k for headers and cam. For 66.5k you could have a monster.

Thanks,

Mike

not bad for stock however, those numbers don't coincide with the stock 600hp that is advertised... definitely has more than 600hp and wow, those are some good gains from just exhaust... seems as if the stock exhaust system was a bit restrictive huh?!

I'd like to see some legit trap speeds out of the 08' Viper. The magazines i've read have it trapping around 128mph which is still considerably slower than what a 600+HP car should be doing... even at its weight.

I am not suprised by that rwhp number one bit. Remember, these cars use the new SAE rating method. Here is some math for comparison:

C6 Z06:

1 / [(450 (dyno jet number) / 505 (SAE engine number)] = 10.8 %

New Viper
1 / [540 (dyno jet number) / 600 (SAE engine number)] = 9 %

These losses are in the ball park. One may have a slightly less loss than the other. The new ZR1 will most certainly dyno around 600 rwhp and people will say that is overrated to. What is overrated are chassis dynos. At any rate, it is very nice to see rwhp numbers for the Viper. I predict more SC'd Z06's very soon.

They also mentioned that it will be tough to modify that motor, since it has variable cam timing, and the pcm code is not available now.

Anyway, 540 at the wheels is a lot of power for a production vehicle. I never would have dreamed in the 80's that we would be seeing these kind of numbers. We are really in the heyday of HP!

No doubt!!! I hope everyone realizes that these are THE GOOD OLE DAYS!!!

Thats very impressive numbers on the new viper. Just like us vette guys, those vipers will be hard to beat with a few mods. Got to love the aftermarket.

It could be, but I doubt it.
Car makers have federal guidlines to follow.
More than likely, the dyno machine is the dyno-jet. It's more like make believe horse power. The new Viper will be close to the Z06, maybe it will surpass it in performance, but if so, it will not be by very much, I have heard that it is even or in some tests under the performance levels of the current Z06. This would not be surprising considering the weight and handling characteristics of the past. I'm not impressed so far.
Nice for a second car, ?? not for me.
