I have a 2002 vr6 Gti as my DD. I hate it with a passion. I love the VR6(great little engine) , decent mileage(~28mpg on my daily 30mile commute) and the hatch/storage space is nice. Everything else about the car is really irritating. Quality has been very poor--this car has been in the shop more than any other car I've ever owned. All of the interior knobs(radio, seats, etc)fell off within the first year. Has been in the shop for: both radiator fans quit, ECT sensor(still not right), coil packs, air bag light--twice, still not right, drivers window fell off track, etc...
If you like to do your own routine maint, this car will irritate you to no end--everything is over-engineered for no apparent reason. A simple oil change is a PIA, the wheels use lug bolts(instead of lug nuts like evry other car on the planet) and are a MF'r to remove since they rust in place. And so on... If you're not the DIY type, then this won't matter to you, but stupid stuff like this that serves no purpose irritates me.
Any way, I will never buy another VW after this one dies. The concept is great and it is a sporty little ride, but the execution just sucks. YMMV
I have a 2006 DSG and it is a fun little car. The DSG is great... I get about 32 on the hwy, and if I feel "sporty", I can use the paddles... Tight suspension, decent handling car. Fit and finish is great!
I personally have no exp with the new GTI, but i can agree with the above poster after owning a 96 GTI VR6, dammmm great engine the rest sucked electrical gremlins galor, then i tried VW agaon and bought a 2000 VR6 Jetta another bag of problems, but i will way they drive great taut suspension really a drivers car with the sport packages And then there was the audi A6 we had. Bottem line when there on there on a pleasure to drive very comfortable confidence inspiring, awesome road manners, But like stated above over engineered (more motors and servos than needed for a sunroof pia when it fails) and very troublesome. If they have gotten better i wouldnt be apposed to giving them another shot but after the debacle with the A6 we had and my GTI no way in the world would i own one after the warranty was up.

I had the pleasure of driving the new GTI (turbo 4cyl. with the DSG), I was quite impressed with the overall manner of the car, quick, well built and the DSG trans is just fantastic...... best auto I have ever driven.

I bought an 06 GTI almost 2 years ago when the new style came out. I have the 6 speed base model 2 door and I love it. I traded an 02 Mini Cooper on it because the Cooper was unreliable. I have only had 1 problem with the car, a fuel injection leak, that was fixed under warranty. I get about 30mpg average with the car if I stay out of the turbo but that is hard to do. I would recommend it.

Over the past 5-10 years VW have been some of the crappiest cars made from a reliability standpoint. They sell well because they have awesome interiors and many people mistakenly think this means the car itself is of high quality.
I'm not hatin' just pointing out the facts. Check it out
The car has had to go in to have three recalls performed.
An engine sensor went out ($200), the horn started honking itself randomly (and often) - another $80, the heat shield came loose - another $80, a problem with the driver side blinker ran $70.
All of these were on separate occasions requiring a trip to the dealer. The rear brake pads also prematurely failed for no apparent reason.
Other than that all I've had to do is replace the battery once and the tires once. That's normal wear and tear.
Overall I really like the car - it is a ball to drive, but given my experience and everything I’ve seen my friends go through with their VW’s I would not purchase one again. Lease maybe, but not purchase.
My hope at this point is for many more years of service without any major expenditures. It’s a fun 25 MPG commuter.
