I was thinking about him a while ago and did some digging

Wikipedia and other sites: Spinks now earns a living at his local McDonalds between working for the YMCA and running an after-school program for the youth of Nebraska.

I was flying out of the Omaha, NE airport about 5 years ago and he's sitting in the bar. It took me a few minutes to put two and two together. I went up and introduced myself and shook his hand. He was very nice and seemed to appreciate the recognition. He now lives in Warren Buffet's home town of Columbus, NE and works at a YMCA there.

I could tell he was a beaten man but I was happy to see he's still alive.

IIRC didn't he run around the ring for a few rounds trying to avoid Tyson, then took a punch, went down and collected a big fat paycheck? Or did he take a fall in the first round? It's been a loooong time.

Edit: nevermind...it was Michael Spinks that fought (ran from) Tyson.

It lasted less than one round. And he didn't run. He certainly received though.

And then lost to him. Along with about 15 fighters than nobody has ever heard of.

I know he got his *** kicked by some locals as he was leaving a gay bar in Detroit about 30 years ago. Maybe the YMCA is the right place for him after all.

I do remember him when he was a fighter, but haven't heard about him for many years.

I don't know, it sure looked to me like Tyson missed with that particualr punch. Leon beting Ali looked pretty suspicious to me too. Oh the Don King years!

Jerry Cooney lives less than a mile from me, his son goes to school with my son. He is a very nice guy and sometimes even remembers my name. Regardless of the decades of time that have passed since his glory days, I sure wouldn't want him to hit me! His hands are HUGE!

He was my boxing hero when I was a little kid. Did Sylvestor Stallone base the Rocky character on him?
