Default Carfax (don't need one, just want info)

So where does Carfax get their information from?

Situation is wife's 6 week old '10 Mustang got backed into by stupid idiot worried about her kid & in a hurry. 'Stang needs a new rear bumper & lr quarter panel work. Idiot was hauling azz in reverse and rammed my wife's parked car pretty good. No accident report needed or filed with DMV.

Idiot's insurance (State Farm) is paying for the repairs at a local Ford dealer's collision shop. So will this situation show up as an accident on Carfax? What about if I try to file for diminished value?

I'm pretty po'ed about the whole mess... its the nicest car my wife has ever had & sure enough this stupid bs happens. The only saving grace is that Christy wasn't in the car and wouldn't have been injured anyway.

It should show up if State Farm sells their claim info, which is likely.

Or the dealership sells theirs.... which is also likely.

The carfax I got on my wife's car listed tune-ups at the dealership.

Did you take good pictures of the damage before work began? Usually if you are open with the potential buyer and provide them all the details, including good pix to show it was just cosmetic damage, it becomes less of an issue. When I was shopping for a C5Z06 I found one that had an accident report, but after tracking down the guy that owned it before and he explained what happened, it didn't bother me.

It's not really sold anymore, all the big ins companies freely trade it with each other, your claim history will follow you.

So its pretty safe to say DMV records are not Carfax's only source.

Makes me wonder if going after the diminished value thing will hurt me when it comes to buying our own insurance policy.

Carfax is not an insurance company, but either way they are likely to get the data.

Don't see how it could hurt.

AFAIK, State Farm does not report to CarFax.

You have diminished value b/c now you will have to disclose the paint and repair work.
It's only going to impact you if you trade or sell the car within the next 3-4 years.

Carfax blows. Anyone in the auto industry will tell you that. They have a great marketing department, but their product sucks ***.

And to the OP. Are you sure the idiot isn't the guy who bought a Ford?

Get it from the dmv mostly. Insurance companies do NOT sell to car fax. A rep from the corporate SF office in florida told me this when I was hit 2 years ago. A car must be reported as a salvage title to the DMV if the frame was bent or other unsafe result of a major accident. If any frame welding takes place during repairs it is also reported to the DMV. Carfax gets that DMV info

An ordinary accident without frame damage will not necesarily appear (and usually doesnt in fact) on Carfax

CarFax is mostly hype. Athough Its good to know that a car was not salvaged, getting a pre-owned that was salvaged is very slim, that is, if you buy from a dealership. Carmax is IMO, the best place to buy cars and to avoid salvaged titles 100%.

I think State Farm does report to Carfax. I have had my Jeep hit twice in the last year and when I was looking at trading it in, the dealerships saw both records. Needless to say, an 06 Jeep Commander with 30k miles and 16k total damage isn't worth much

I ordered a carfax on the 08 coupe. Seller told me it had fallen off a jack and cracked the RF fender. He had it replaced at a chevy dealer, the carfax just said the car was serviced.

Everything checked out OK on the repair, I couldn't tell the fender was replaced. Bought the car.

Were there any police reports filed either time?

I previously owned a camaro that was totalled twice by different insurance companies because idiots ran into me. The carfax is still clean on that car. I think it's a crap shoot.

Why did you have your Jeep hit? Was it misbehaving?
