Default What's the difference between a Land Rover and a Range Rover?

I looked at Wikipedia and other sources, but I'm still confused. Is a Range Rover a Land Rover model, the Land Rover Range Rover? The ones I've seen have either Land Rover or Range Rover on them but not both. Is a Discovery a Land Rover or a Range Rover?

I think Range Rover is a model name for one particular vehicle in the Land Rover brand.

I could be wrong.

The Land Rover is designed to be taken off the road and in rough terrain, while the Range Rover is more of a luxury vehicle.

I think your'e right . Land Rover was a division of British Leyland back in the day and only had one model -- the basic utility vehicle called the Land Rover .

The Range Rover is the top of the current line --- the Discovery is next down and the Land Rover(still pretty basic) at the bottom ..

Yes, Range Rover is a Land Rover model.

So you would have a Land Rover Range Rover, like you would have a Land Rover Discovery, or a Chevy Suburban.

Plus, Ranger Rover Sport is different from a Range Rover.

They don't make Discos anymore... they're called LR4s.

LR2 would be the base model, a gussied up Ford Escape.

No such thing as just a Land Rover.

(all with respect to current models...)

The Range Rover is a four-wheel drive luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Land Rover in the United Kingdom, owned by the India-based Tata Motors. It was first introduced in 1970 and is still in production today. There have so far been three major generations.

Go to here: http://www.landroverusa.com/us/en/home.htm

Currently Land Rover offers two Range Rover models, and two Land Rover ("LR") models.

Both will break down regularly but one will cost more to fix.

Yeah, the Range Rover has held on to the title of "Least Reliable Vehicle" for over a decade.

Aha! It's just that I'm used to seeing the manufacturers name and the model on cars, like Chevrolet Impala. It appears Land Rover doesn't do it like that.

Wiki is right and I mistyped.

Read C5SilverBullet's post, and that post only.

Yes they do. CuzzinJack is in England. Over there they are still called Discovery's. Over here they were renamed.

The LR4 is the renamed Discovery.
The L42 is the renamed Freelander.
And we don't have the Defender here anymore either.
