I've never been to a drive-in movie theater (there are none in Orange County, AFAIK). More to the point, I don't see the attraction. A movie without surround sound? Why bother?
Throwback to a much simpler time. Especially nice if you have a convertible. Sitting under the stars in your own car instead of a crowded theater with ill-behaved high school punks, fat f*cks getting up and walking in front of you every 10 minutes to hit the snack bar for the free refills on their 10-gallon tub of popcorn, black chicks talking (loud) on their cell phones, dumbassed Mexicans who bring their screaming 6-month old baby to the midnight showing of Terminator 3 because they were too cheap to hire a babysitter, etc, etc.....
There used to be one in Orange County only about 12 years ago at Beach and the 22. I'm surprised they were able to hold out as long as they did because that was a prime location for a shopping center, which it eventually became. Took many dates there but I don't recall watching much of any of the movies.
I used to take Beach Blvd down to Huntington Beach during the summers. I know that location and vaguely remember the construction of a shopping center in that area, but not that there was a drive-in movie theater there beforehand. Since I was always driving, though, it wouldn't surprise me if I never noticed it was a drive-in.

Found a tidbit about it online http://www.drive-insdownunder.com.au...ca_hiway39.htm How it made it to a site about Aussie drive-ins I don't know. It took up all that space that's now Lowes and Wal-Mart. One site said it was California's largest drive in.
When I grew-up in S.W. Taxylvania, there were drive-ins all-over the place, 6 to 8 with-in a 45 minute drive:
I think at one-time, Pittsburgh had more drive-ins, per-capita, than any-other American city
Ah, the drive in movie - what remembrances I have:
- Was taken advantage of at an early age in the back seat of a '57 Chevy is one
- Sneaking a group in without paying (they were in the trunk)
- Meeting up with others that scaled the fence of the drive in.
- Spot lighting the screen during intermission.
- Checking out the opposition in the cars on both sides of mine.
- Of course - taking the speaker with me when I was in a hurry to leave
- And, not last or least - drinking coke and rums - and then chewing Spearmint Gum so the parents wouldn't catch on that some underage drinking was occurring on those Friday and Saturday night dates!
