Default Largest Small Block Chevy Engine (aftermarket)

What is the largest aftermarket small block Chevy engine? I know there are some in the lower 500 cubic inch arena being built by Sonny Leonard. Anyone know of anything any larger?

Katech is currently taking orders for a 500 cube engine. Don't know if it's a small block or not.

I *think* GM Performance Parts offers an LSX engine that is 500+ cubes...

Hard to imagine but they're doing it...

Wiki says 454. Doesn't mean it's right, of course.

454 is really the largest you should go.

Since most after market blocks are 4.155 or 4.190 max bore you would need a tall deck block and a 4.5" crank. The motor would be a ticking time bomb with 0 room for error and if something does go wrong it wont have enough material to be fixed.

The motor would have to be NA as the pistons would not have enough meat on the to support a decent compression height or ring pack, the oil ring would be in the pin boss are and the cylinder wall loading would be ridiculous.

The LS7 is a small block, so 454 wouldn't be too far off. It comes down to block strength and how much you can over bore it.

the LSX family of engines has a much taller deck than a SBC so you can use a longer rod and with the DART Bilet block or the Warhawk block you can get real close to 500ci. the main reason for ths is that the motors can go to 4.250 bores so you don't need a ridiculous long stroke.

I *believe* the LSX can be taken to 482ci

the Warhawk tall-deck block can go a bit higher but their site suggests 454ci

and I don't consider the LSX Gen III/IV motor to be a SBC.

In the traditional sense, it's not but it IS the "small block" of today

What would you consider it then?

Officially - the LS family are Generation III & Generation IV small block Chevy engines - although they share zero parts with the Generation II SBC. Generation II SBC is the traditional water cooled intake manifold/rear mount distributor that we know and love.

The Warhawk is currently the largest LS/SBC at 481ci
