They're generally called small blocks but GM claims 50 years of the Small Block Chevy when the LSx was a clean sheet motor.
The only thing that is shared between a Gen I or II motor (SBC) and the Gen III/IV motors (LS) is the bore spacing.
The swap and conversion guys generally call them LS motors.

I seem to recall always having to reach over the carb to set the dwell on my SBCs. Are you sure you didn't mean "rear-mount" distributors?

With standard deck height, I believe that you can get up to 468 cubic inches.. With tall deck, you can get some more..

Actually Gen II is a front distributor behind the water pump.
Gen I was in the back.

The engine in the Pratt & Miller C6.RS is 500 cubic inches. All-aluminum based on LS-architecture, but doesn't actually share any parts. Over 600 hp naturally aspirated

Sadly I don't think so. Opti was not the smartest idea but far from the worst I've never lost an opti spark with less than 80k on it and even then it was cheaper than doing a timing belt on my Honda.

depends if they are an iron or aluminum block. Iron is not sleeved, aluminum is.
