Took my S-10 in to get a "once over" to make sure everything was ship shape...
the very next day - CHECK ENGINE SOON light. Never seen it before. And I'm supposed to be taking this truck to Nashville tomorrow. I am absolutely beside myself to the point that there hasn't been a smiley invented yet to match it.

Check engine lights are a joke, the epitome of idiot lights. With GM product it is probably a sensor that is triggering it. Do you have any local autozones or the like that will pull the code for free?

I'll check into the "Auto Zones" of the area. Are there any situations where it would be unsafe to drive, esp long distance? (already fixed the gas cap)

That's why when the check engine light came on in my truck, I just pulled the light bulb out of the gauge cluster

If I recall correctly, you have an oil pressure and temp guage on that S-10; that is all you really need (as far as trip durability is concerned) and cars before computers did just fine without all the idiot lights. I had someone looking at an 88 Olds Cutless I was selling for $1000 and they commented the check engine light was on; I almost laughed outloud.

There are many things that could have triggered a "Check Engine" light. Some "could" be serious, (but not necessarily unsafe) to something that is so minor, that postponing a vacation trip over it would not be necessary. It could be nothing more than a system "Hiccup", and once reset, it may not come back on again.

He can do it for free at home with a paper clip. Be careful as it will get hot, though.
codes mean almost nothing to the home mech. they are so general and not specific at all. they are not much help and can only point you in the direction of the problem.
