Museum delivery
I am planning on a museum delivery later in the summer. Has anybody done the trip back to the west coast and if so, is there a recommended way we should come back. We aren't in a rush so a few sites would be nice...Mike

I've done it 4 times - the first mostly I-10, once mostly I-80, and twice mostly I-40. I-40 is the most direct. This was my last trip:
LANE MOTOR MUSEUM, NASHVILLE, TN
MID AMERICA CORVETTES, EFFINGHAM, IL
TOMBSTONE, AZ
OLD TUCSON STUDIOS
FRIEND IN SURPRISE
METEOR CRATER NEAR WINSLOW, AZ
OATMAN, AZ (RTE 66)
3,501 MILES, 25.5 MPG

On that route, I'd say skip Old Tucson, it's a tourist trap. Instead visit
the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. It's a zoo specializing in that
desert area. A number of years ago the BBC did a series on the greatest
zoos in the world, and ASDM was one of two in the US (the other being
San Diego).
And in Tombstone, be sure to have a cold one at the Crystal Palace. My
great-grandfather owned in the mining days.
And if it's late summer, you may want to stay off off I10 entirely because
of the heat.

I took the northern route in 2000. Here is a web site with info and photos. Click on "Next Page" to navigate.

We drove to Alabama and on to the museum in Ky. in May 2012, returned first part of June. Like c5bob said, Hwy 40/ (old route 66) is the most direct route, and lots of things to see. If you go in the middle of summer expect HOT weather! We've driven to Albuquerque many times, and the desert areas can be brutal! 115 degrees or 120 not uncommon. Have lunch at Seligman at the Road Kill cafe, and check out the jackasses at Oatman!

In early September 2007 I came back to CA on the northern route. Went up thru Indiana, Iowa to South Dakota. Saw Mt. Rushmore, Custer National Park, Little Big Horn, Yellowstone, Boise and stayed a few days on the Oregon coast at Depoe Bay. Then headed back to reality. The weather was outstanding.
