STAR replaced test only, and can be any station, they just have to meet some performance standards that the EPA made up.

What are the new standards on this "STAR" test?

Sorry for the ambiguity. It has nothing to do with the test (that's just more crap the EPA makes up), it's performance of the station itself. The number of times a car passed there and failed at another station, bait cars, etc.

No need for the consumer to worry about this or higher cost of passing?

The test-only place I used to go to is not star certified, luckily I'm friends with a few of the techs at a place that is.

As for cost, I don't think there are any surprises. Wouldn't be surprised if they start jacking prices up for older cars, though (pre OBDII)

Has something changed? I've had a Y-tube with dual cones for years, and have never failed CA smog.

or is your comment specific to the Blackwing?

When I had a C5 I'd pass with the Blackwing on. Maybe things have changed...

I recently had to get a smog (not on the Vette) at a "Star" station; the equipment looked the same before they were a "Star" certified smog station and I saw no changes in the testing procedures. BUT, there was an increase in fees due to this "Star" test level, which I had to go to. I think this is another way of the State of CA getting extra money from its residences.

As far as Corvette goodies under the hood, I've never been asked or questioned about my aftermarket CAI or the "shorty" headers during my smog renewal - knock on wood. But both are carb certified if they did ask. I'll let you know if I pass these latest smog hoops in Sept (not stock cam, intake CAI, exhaust or stock tuned).

Same experience here when I took my non Vette it. It was $80; they told me it was because of the extra training. Of course, after I asked them about the price; they checked my 190K beater(original cats) with a fine tooth comb, checking my gas cap twice!

thanks for the replays not specific to the blackwing more on the "Star"

I was thinking about additional mods, headers, intake etc. with the new "Star" test will our mods cause us to start failing the test just more headaches for all of use no mater what car we drive.

As I understand it, any CAI without CARB approval will fail. Usually an approved kit will come with a metal sticker that you can stick under the hood which will have the CARB approval number on it. You've been lucky if you've been passed before.
