Many of you are aware of the WSCC Convention in Las Vegas this May. For those that are not aware, you can see the basics at www.corvetteconvention.com. I just got word, VERIFIED IN WRITING from Chris Blair, VP of Racing Operations, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, clarifying the rules that will be in place for the Corvette Drags during convention....
>> Standard helmet rules apply - everyone needs to have a Snell 2000 or newer helmet. Snell M (motorcycle) ok for 10.00 seconds and slower.
>> No roll bars required on cars 11.00 seconds and slower INCLUDING CONVERTIBLES.
For those that havn't checked out the website, you really should. The drag races are Corvette ONLY - not just a lane set aside for us. There is an Auto-X at the track on the same day. There is a car show under the domed Fremont Street. Rallies, poker runs, casino night, BBQ, hospitality rooms (off the hook parties), and great hotel rates where we can all stay together and prty without having to worry about driving home at night. This event ROX!

this event will be off the chain i wont be racing my car but i will get my buddy gary thompson out there
Sounds like fun and I'll be able to run my vert for the first time. hope I don't have to peddle to keep it in the 11 range. long way to go to get kicked out right away. Anyone have time slips for stock ls2 with sc running around 520 wwhp. (as a time guage). I will be adding new headers & x pipe to the exhisting bb fusions. should have #s in the 550 range.

I think you should be anywhere from 11.3 to 11.7 depending on your tires and driver experience.

Without Drag radials, 11.75-12.25. With DR's 11.25-11.50ish.
In my opinion it's crazy to run a convertible at the drags in the 11's,
12's 13's or whatever without a rollbar. Anything can happen, if not with your car, maybe the guy next to you. This is what happened to a couple of buddies I race with at Infineon today. Apparently. a broken radiator hose may have caused the Nova to cross and hit the Vega. The Nova could easily have gone over on it's top at his normal trap speed of about 125mph. Fortunately they both walked away. Imagine a convertible with no roll bar...
If anyones interested I have some stock 01Z 17's powder coated black with M/T ET Street radials with lots of thread left that I looking to sell. PM me if interested. I was able to pull consistant 1.7's w/ 460hp with these. They fit all C5/C6 (not sure about C6Z, and maybe C4 but not sure).

I feel much safer on a dragstrip (cars going same direction) under some controled enviroment Rather than Vasco road with some people who are distracted only for a few secounds.
I'll take my chances on the drag strip. Life comes with no guarantees. access your own comfort level of risk. I may only do this once. (like my skydiving experience). Glad it did it once.
Most events won't allow convertables on their track or strip. w/o a roll cage/bar anyway. This event gives me the oppertunity to try this out with a more experianced person to give advice where needed.
Thankyou for your concern though!
Glad your friends made out with no major injurys.
Wish you the best, I'm sure you'll be fine. The Nova did split a radiator hose and ran over his own coolant. Slid on his roof from the left lane to the right and collected the Vega. I have raced a couple of times in Vegas. It's a good, safe track. There is a reason NHRA mandates a rollbar for cars under 14.99

I couldn't have said it better myself. I'd rather die at 40 gripping the wheel than die at 80 in the grandstands.

Actually NHRA will allow Roadsters with no roll bar down to 13.50. 13.49 is the roll bar required limit. That is, unless they have changed it in the past 18 months.

You must really love that steering wheel! How's this, make 200+ runs a year and still die at 80 in the grandstands? I stand corrected. The et limit for convertibles is 13.49.

Just so everyone knows in advance that Las Vegas is a altitude corrected track and the numbers that you run at sea level will not be the same at Las Vegas.
I have announced there (It is one of the sister tracks to Infineon) and you may actually lose 2-3 tenths in ET because of the difference in elevation and the much drier desert air.
Supercharged cars are less affected.
Another thing I do not understand since they are a NHRA track and use the same safety guide lines as mandated by NHRA and the insurance companies is the change on the roll bar requirements for this race?

I believe this private event carries its own insurance and is not NHRA sanctioned. Just like Sacramento lets roadsters run down to 11.50 at Vette Magic - even when they had their NHRA sanctioning (I know they have had and lost it a few times over the years).

Sacramento Raceway is still a NHRA sanctioned track.
They will be holding a NHRA National Open event again this year and will be participating in the NHRA Division 7 Summit ET Series as well.
Eric Arnett who works at both Infineon and Sacramento Raceway was one of the Sacramento reps at the just held track operators meeting in Las Vegas.
BTW, Sacramento has been under NHRA sanction for the last 40 + years and the previous AHRA sanction (now defunct) was back in the mid 1960's when the late Kerry Clark had the track.
